Is Jim From “The Office” Really the Prince Charming We Thought?

Published

on

First, there was Adam and Eve. Then came Romeo and Juliet, followed by Bonnie and Clyde. Our modern-day power couple of choice? Jim and Pam from “The Office”. But, recent re-watchings of the classic series have put fans on edge as they gain a new perspective. What if the charming Casanova, Jim Halpert, the Prince Charming we were all rooting for, was really just a jerk?

Exhibit A: Casino Night (S2:E22)

In the show’s season 2 finale, Michael hosts Casino Night at Dunder Mifflin. We have to sit through the cutest scenes of Jim and Pam bonding over wedding band audition tapes and flirting over poker, only to hear Pam reject Jim in the parking lot later that night. And yet, after being rejected, Jim still returns to the upstairs office later that night and kisses Pam, after she’s already told him she doesn’t want to take things further. (Not to mention the fact that she’s still engaged.)

Exhibit B: Double Standards

In S4:E9, Jim and Pam attend a dinner party at Michael and Jan’s place, and when things (inevitably) start to get hairy, Jim bails from the party by claiming his apartment flooded, leaving Pam to her own devices in a room of hungry, cranky employees. And yet, in season 6, Jim prevents Pam from making an excuse to avoid going on a double date with her mom and (gag) Michael. It seems like Jim’s only a stickler for the rules when it benefits him.

Exhibit C: Jim Buys a House

Let’s not forget that in season five, Jim BUYS A HOUSE without telling Pam. Luckily for him, he wins her over with a garage-turned-art-studio, but a purchase that large is never something that should be completed without telling your significant other. I mean, come on… joint bank account.

In Defense of Jim

While these irresponsible decisions don’t look so good right next to each other, let’s not forget that they were all made with the best intentions. Right before he kissed Pam during Casino Night, she was talking to her mom about being in love with him. When he made an excuse to leave the dinner party, he tried to take her with him, and when he shot down her excuse for the double date, it was because he knew she needed to support her mom. Plus, even though surprising her with a house was impulsive, it was incredibly romantic.

The Verdict

When it comes down to it, Jim has the best intentions in his relationship with Pam. While his execution is often sloppy and impulsive, we can chalk these little risks and mistakes up to his immaturities, and not to his true personality. At the end of the day, Jim will always be our golden boy, no matter how many mistakes he made along the way.
