Beloved actress Jessica Lange was a staple in the first several seasons of the popular horror anthology American Horror Story. From Sister Jude Martin to Elsa Mars, Lange has delivered unforgettable performances. While she loves working with show creator Ryan Murphy, gore is one thing she says she wanted to avoid.
Keep It Away From Lange
In an interview with Screen Rant, Lange divulged her disdain for American Horror Story‘s gory parts. “There are things that, I tell you, I won’t do. But we have come to kind of an understanding. For instance, in American Horror Story, my characters never had to… Over those four years of doing that, I wasn’t involved in the really gory aspect of that series,” Lange told the publication. “I said, from the beginning, I didn’t want that. The thing that interests me was the psychological danger. You know, the failings. But I did not want to do the other stuff. And he always respected that. So instead, he would give me, like a Bowie song to sing, which was a great trade-off.” In fact, Lange sung covers of Bowie, Lana Del Rey, and Shirley Ellis for the show.
Lange’s run on American Horror Story began with 2011’s Murder House. Her portrayal as Constance Langdon earned Lange Emmy and Golden Globe wins for Best Supporting Actress. The Minnesota native would return to both award ceremonies for a handful of nominations. In 2014, Lange won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for Coven. Following 2015’s Freak Show, Lange exited the series.
Closing The Book On ‘American Horror Story’?
Unfortunately, Lange doesn’t seem to be returning to American Horror Story. In 2018, she returned to the series after three years away for Apocalypse. For two episodes, she reprised her Emmy-winning role as Constance Langdon. “I did this because it was recreating Constance, which was– for me, it was a very important time when I did that first season, ‘Murder House,'” she told The Wrap. One major reason for her possible permanent departure involves several longtime actors. “And also I think a lot of the actors that I was working with, people that I really love working with, like Sarah [Paulson] or Frances [Conroy] or Kathy [Bates]– I don’t know who’s in this new season, but I don’t think it would be the same,” she also told The Wrap. In American Horror Story: 1984, Paulson is rumored to have a small part. Conroy and Bates were last seen in Apocalypse.
Collaborations Over The Years
Lange’s working relationship with Murphy has grown outside of American Horror Story. In 2015, she joined the cast of Murphy’s Broadway adaptation of Long Day’s Journey into Night. “What was wonderful is Ryan and I were talking, he’s so generous, and I mentioned this thing of wanting to do this play because I had done it 15 years ago and I really wanted to do it again. He went out and got the rights, which was so touching. I love him,” Lange told Deadline. The actress portrayed James Tyrone Sr.’s wife Mary. In 2000, she played the same role inside London’s Lyric Theatre.
In 2017, Lange joined Murphy’s other anthology series Feud. The first season involved the real-life battle between Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. In the show, she portrayed actress Joan Crawford. Lange and co-star Susan Sarandon both earned Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for their performances. Her recent project with Murphy is Netflix’s The Politician. In the show, she plays Infinity Jackson’s grandmother Dusty. The show reunites Lange with American Horror Story alumni Dylan McDermott and Teddy Sears. Fortunately for her, no gore was anywhere near these programs.
