After 14 exciting seasons, Supernatural is coming to a close this fall on The CW. As expected, fans around the world aren’t ready to say goodbye to the Winchester brothers. Supernatural star Jensen Ackles, however, believes they could return in the future.

Just Taking Some Time Off?

At Beverly Hills’ TV Critics’ Association press tour panel, the cast and crew discussed the final season. During the panel, Ackles kicked things off by giving some interesting words. “It’s a long journey. I don’t think it’s ever going to be over. It’s just going to go away for a while. I don’t know how long,” he stated.

While plans for a return weren’t announced, this got reporters talking. Ackles gave a further explanation of his original statement. “I’m not ever ready to close doors or burn bridges. I think that’s foolish. Am I saying there’s something in the works? No. Am I saying I’d be open to having a conversation about this in the future? What’s the harm in that?” he said.

Branching Out At Times

In the past, there have been spinoff plans to expand the Supernatural universe. In 2013, The CW announced Supernatural: Bloodlines, which was based in Chicago. The backdoor pilot was the 20th episode of season nine. Following the season, The CW confirmed they’ve scrapped plans for Bloodlines.

In 2017, they announced the spin-off series Wayward Sisters. Its backdoor pilot was episode ten in season 13. The series was set to follow Sheriff Jody Mills, her two daughters, and some friends as they take on demons. Unlike Bloodlines, the female-led show was slated to have appearances by Supernatural characters. “Should Wayward be fortunate enough to go forward, we want to cross-pollinate the two shows as much as we can. Sometimes that will be with higher-profile characters: Sam and Dean, Castiel,” Supernatural executive producer Andrew Daab told TVLine. Unfortunately, the show was also scrapped by the network last year. “We love these characters, and have spent almost two years trying to make this show a reality on the network… but there are some fights, sometimes, you can’t win,” Daab said on Twitter.

If there were future spinoff ideas, you can bet Sam and Dean would make a surprise appearance.

This Is The End

While fans might be heartbroken with the final season, Ackles states it was time to close the book. ““We felt a duty to [end it] when it felt right and do it right. All signs pointed to this season. We all gave each other hugs and agreed and said, ‘Let’s do it, and do it right,'” he said at the panel.

The final season of Supernatural will run for 20 episodes. Ackles will direct the fourth episode of the season. This will be his seventh episode of Supernatural he’s directed during the show’s run. The last episode he directed was season 11’s “The Bad Seed.”

Ackles isn’t the only Supernatural cast member sitting in the director’s chair this season. Richard Speight Jr., who played Gabriel, will direct an episode. He’s directed nine other Supernatural episodes, including the Reservoir Dogs homage “Stuck in the Middle (With You).” Matt Cohen, who portrayed young John Winchester, will also get a director’s credit. He recently directed episodes of the show Cowgirl Up.

The final season will also see the return of Jake Abel as Sam and Dean’s half brother Adam Milligan. Abel was last seen in the season five finale “Swan Song,” which ended with Adam locked in a cage. While people have been revived throughout the series, Daab states things will be permanent. “We’re looking at this as a true ending. [The characters] are going to be facing life or death. Really, they face it all the time, but this time it’s for real,” he said at the panel.

Supernatural‘s final season will debut on October 10.
