Jennifer Lawrence Taking A Break From Acting To ‘Fix Our Democracy’

Published

on

Jennifer Lawrence recently announced she’s taking a break from Hollywood to enter another toxic playground of power, money, and hypocrisy: politics. The highest-paid actress in the industry revealed the news while promoting her latest movie, the spy thriller Red Sparrow saying that she will take a break to focus on the “corruption in politics.”

A Divisive Plan

The 27-year-old Oscar winner might be best known for her acting (or quirky interviewing skills), but she’s been on the board of the nonprofit organization Represent.Us for the last few years and claims she will be working with them full-time to engage young people in politics. “I’m going to take the next year off,” the 27-year-old told Entertainment Tonight. “I’m going to be working with this organization as a part of Represent.Us … trying to get young people engaged politically on a local level.”

“It doesn’t have anything to do with partisan [politics],” she clarified. “It’s just anti-corruption and stuff trying to pass state by state laws that can help prevent corruption, fix our democracy.”

Hollywood To The Farm

It’s not the first time the Oscar winner has claimed she will take a break from Hollywood. Last year she told ELLE Magazine that she was going to take a break and maybe “get a farm,” adding; “I want to be, like, milking goats.”

In an interview on Today while promoting her movie Mother! last November, she told Savannah Guthrie, “I’m taking one [a break]. I don’t have anything set for two years.”

J-Law Gone?

It looks like she may keep to her word. After releasing an average of three movies annually over the last seven years, Lawrence has little coming up according to her IMDb page. Her only slated role is in Adam McKay’s Bad Blood, a biopic about Elizabeth Holmes, founder of blood testing company Theranos. The actress signed on to the movie 2016, but it remains in the pre-production stages.

The only other commitment in her calendar is the release of X-Men: Dark Phoenix in November where she will reprise her role as mutant Mystique. So is it goodbye until then, or after?

Outspoken Star

Lawrence is known for her political activism and has been outspoken on several issues including the Hollywood gender pay gap and Time’s Up movement. In December, she received the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award at the 2017 Women in Entertainment Power 100 breakfast.

While accepting the award, she claimed that while she doesn’t find it easy to “speak out” and “face criticism on a global scale,” she has “been given a platform, and if I don’t use it, then I don’t deserve it.”
