Jean-Luc Picard Is No Longer A Captain In New Series

Published

on

With the success of Star Trek: Discovery, the Star Trek franchise is back in full swing like it was in its heyday. With that came an extra source of nostalgia when last year it was announced that Patrick Stewart would return as the fan-favorite character, Jean-Luc Picard. While this is exciting in its own right, Patrick Stewart promised that Picard will be in a new stage of his life in this new series. What could this mean for the old crew of the Enterprise?

Not A Captian But Still Important

In the episode “All Good Things…”, the series finale of Star Trek: The Next Generation, we got a hint about what would happen to a future Picard. While this future was ultimately not true due to the fact that Q was manipulating events to put Picard and the rest of humanity on trial, it does bear mentioning. In this aborted timeline, he is an old man that has returned to his father’s vineyard after suffering from medical problems.

It’s still possible that Picard could end up like this. He refused to be promoted to the rank of Admiral so many times as exploring is his true passion. But, Patrick Stewart has promised that Picard has changed due to recent events. These events we have actually seen on screen only ten years ago.

Romulus’ Destruction

Alex Kurtzman stated that the new Picard series shall address the destruction of the Romulus in the Prime timeline. In Star Trek 2009, Spock from the Prime continuity timeline traveled back in time when he was attempting to stop the supernova that caused the destruction of the homeworld of one of the most important galactic empires in the Star Trek franchise.

In that film, it is established that in 2387, the Hobus Star System went supernova. The result was catastrophic for several major reasons, and according to the non-canonical comics, Picard was part of the events that were going on at the time. Star Trek: The Next Generation ended in 2370 and Patrick Stewart mentioned that this series will be twenty years later. The Hobus Supernova was only three years ago, meaning that it could still weigh heavily on Picard.

Cameos Of The Other Enterprise Crew Members?

While it would be lovely to see the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation get back together and play these iconic roles, it’s looking less likely. Jonathan Frakes confirmed in an interview that he would love to be involved with the show, but more than likely just as a director.

As far as the rest of the cast is concerned, this is Patrick Stewart’s show. The characters did go their own separate ways in Star Trek: Nemesis, so it makes sense. Hopefully, we will get references to the old crew. But it would make many fans happy if they are actually being secretive about the whole thing and we actually get a reunion or at least some cameos. Regardless, look forward to seeing the Picard series sometime in 2020.

Beverly Hills, 90210: Was Luke Perry Team Dylan or Team Brandon?

Some television shows come into our lives at the exact right moment, so that they become inextricably bound with our memories of those complicated coming-of-age years, Beverly Hills 90210 is without a doubt one of those shows. We all tuned in week after week, year after year because the drama was just so addicting. The love triangles! The will-they-won’t-theys! Meanwhile, when the cameras weren’t rolling, the cast was up to plenty of off-set antics of their own. Disclaimer: after you read about what went down, it might have you rethinking everything — were those angsty expressions just good acting, or were they bringing some real-life drama into it?
