Jason Momoa, AKA Khal Drogo, Shaves His Iconic Beard To Save The Planet

Game of Thrones and Aquaman fans are absolutely shook after hearing some unbelievable news on April 17th, just a few days after the eighth season of Game of Thrones premiered. Jason Momoa, who played Khal Drogo and Aquaman, has shaved his iconic beard in order to bring awareness to his latest environmental protection project. He is launching a brand of aluminum water cans to replace plastic bottles that litter the land and sea. As both Khal of the Great Grass Sea and child of Atlantis, it’s no surprise he has a passion for saving the world around us. Here’s how he got fans’ undivided attention with a single four-minute Youtube clip.

Goodbye Drogo…

Momoa uploaded a video to YouTube titled  “Goodbye Drogo… I SHAVED!” on April 17th. At the time this article was written, the video had over seven million views. The video begins with Momoa hiking through the desert with a friend. He stumbles through piles of plastic, shaking his head in frustration. Momoa goes on to admit he hadn’t shaved since 2012, which would have been right after he finished filming season one of Game of Thrones. Then, he turns on the electric razor and triumphantly throws beard hair to the wind yelling “Goodbye Drogo!” This is the moment when many fans’ hearts sank.

Hello Aluminum

Once he begins to shave, Momoa tells fans he is posting the video to bring awareness to humans’ overuse and waste of plastic. He is currently launching a brand of aluminum water cans, which are much more environmentally conscious than plastic bottles. Momoa reminds us that recycling is a major way for us to reduce our environmental impact, and explains why aluminum is a great alternative to plastic. He states, “About 75% of aluminum that’s ever been used is still in circulation today, and it’s 100% recyclable, so, you drink the [aluminum] can and in about 60 days it’ll be back [to full use].” Plastic cannot be fully recycled and contributes to ocean pollution and other habitat destruction around the world. Jason is hopeful that his brand of aluminum canned water will encourage people to take action, rather than watch passively as plastic takes over our precious lands.

Fans Panic Over Losing Drogo’s Signature Look

Momoa seemed very happy about his new life change. He successfully used his celebrity power to make a positive impact and is proud to be working on an environmental cause. Fans, however, wish he would have used less drastic measures to bring awareness. Twitter flooded with GoT and Aquaman fans mourning the loss of the luscious beard. One fan sarcastically lamented the loss by posting: “Well done guys, first you destroyed the planet and now you destroy Jason Momoa’s beard. I don’t know which is worse. Shame on you all.” Other fans lauded over his video, posting praise to the actor for his good work. One wrote, “Why does Jason Momoa have to be an absolute specimen of the human form AND be a great guy?” Another tweeted, “Jason Momoa shaved his beard so you’ll start using aluminum cans instead of plastic. 10-4 good buddy!”

Choosing Aluminum Over Plastic

Jason is working with Ball Corporation to design and manufacture the aluminum water cans. His work has the potential to drastically reduce plastic waste, and change the way people view their buying choices. Jason is using his celebrity power for a good cause, which doesn’t happen too often in Hollywood. The video shows he is truly passionate about his work. Though fans may be upset about him losing the hot Drogo beard, at least they can celebrate that is one publicity stunt that has made a truly positive impact on the world.
