‘Supernatural’ Star Jared Padalecki To Star In ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ Reboot

Texas Ranger

Television fans of the 1990s, we have good news for you: Walker, Texas Ranger is back in town, but there are a few changes; namely that Chuck Norris isn’t reprising his famous role. Instead, Supernatural star Jared Padalecki is set to headline and executive produce Walker, a reimagining of the popular ‘90s action/crime series. What’s going to be involved in the reboot?

A Blast From The ‘90s

From 1993 to 2001, audiences tuned in weekly to watch the next installments of Texas Ranger Sergeant Cordell Walker (Chuck Norris) in Walker, Texas Ranger. He’s a ranger who believes in the Code of the Old West. Fans fell in love with Walker, who became a hero who believed in justice. The show was the closest thing to an old-time Western in the ‘90s—a rare treat in the modern-day television industry.

Thanks to Norris, Saturday nights at 9 PM on CBS were the most entertaining day of the week for the first time since James Arness and the cast of Gunsmoke occupied Saturday nights more than 20 years prior. Fans wanted to stay home on a Saturday night instead of going out with friends and family. Walker, Texas Ranger became a pop culture icon, and nothing has compared to it since then.

About The Reboot

As Supernatural is heading into its 15th and final season, fans knew Padalecki would be looking for his next role. After being on a show for 15 straight years, it’ll be nice for him to tackle a new project. He couldn’t have picked a better show to join.

The reboot, written by Anna Fricke (Valor) and executive produced by Dan Lin (Lethal Weapon) and Dan Spilo (Sunnyside), is currently being shopped around by various studios and networks, including the CW (the home of Supernatural), and CBS, which aired Norris’ Walker, Texas Ranger. While most people panic when they hear the word “reboot” or “revival,” the new Walker closely follows the original show’s plot.

Staying true to Norris’ show, Walker will get a female partner and he’ll be forced to explore morality, family, and rediscovering his lost common ground with others. He does this while investigating the biggest crimes in Texas’ most elite unit. Walker, a broken widower and father of two, returns home, thinking his job will be easy. Of course, he realizes there is more work to be done at home than he thought.

Like the original series, Walker and his new female partner (a rare trait in Texas Rangers’ history) become known as modern-day heroes. We need Walker to save us from evil. The ranger and his partner never stray from their moral codes to fight for what’s right—to always fight for justice, even if it goes against the rules.

Padalecki, a Texas native, shared the news on his Twitter page, simply adding a “crossing his fingers” emoji about the project. He hasn’t said anything else about the reboot, but fans can only hope he is excited to take over an iconic television role. Maybe Norris will make a guest appearance in an episode. We can only dream.

Other Reboots

Walker, Texas Ranger isn’t the first show to have a reboot, a show that features a reincarnation of the beloved title character, as opposed to a revival, where the original cast returns for another season of a beloved show. Some other current and planned reboots include Gossip Girl, Charmed, Sabrina, Bewitched, Dynasty, Lost in Space, The Twilight Zone, and more.

No matter how people feel regarding reboots, they will have to give Walker a chance. Judging from Padalecki’s performance for the past 15 years on Supernatural, he’ll put 100-percent of his effort into the new role. He used to fight supernatural forces. Now, he’ll have to trade that in to fight Western crime.
