With Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin on board, Grace & Frankie was sure to be a hit. The Netflix show became one of the most beloved series on the streaming service. Netflix renewed the show for its seventh and final season, and its two lead actresses have mixed feelings.
Time To Say Goodbye
In a joint statement to Entertainment Tonight, Fonda and Tomlin thanked the streaming service for a fantastic journey. “We are both delighted and heartbroken that Grace & Frankie will be back for its seventh, though final, season. We’re so grateful that our show has been able to deal with issues that have really connected to our grand generation. And their kids, and amazingly, their kids as well,” they told the publication. “We’ll miss these two old gals, Grace and Frankie, as much as many of their fans will, but we’ll still be around. We’ve outlasted so many things — just hope we don’t outlast the planet.”
As expected, fans are also saddened by the news. “I love this show so much. I cannot believe the news. Glad you get to go out on your own terms, but Netflix won’t be the same without you. Fonda and Tomlin the dream team. Thank you for all the laughs. This show saved me from a dark time in my life, and I will forever be grateful,” Twitter user Maddy_Pappas_ said. While it’s geared towards an older audience, Grace & Frankie has also meant a lot to younger audiences. “I’m literally crying over this because this show meant my whole summer with my mom, us both watching it and laughing at Frankie and Grace squatting. I’m only 15 but I appreciate this wonderful show in every element, the cast, the crew. @Janefonda & @LilyTomlin truly made me happy,” Twitter user dawerdboy said.
Grace & Frankie debuted back in 2015 to positive reviews. Its first season gave Tomlin Golden Globe and Emmy nominations for Best Actress In A Comedy. Over the years, the show gained nine more Emmy nominations. At the 2017 Emmys, both Tomlin and Fonda received Best Actress nominations.
An On-Screen Reunion?
With many guest stars, one person fans want on the show is Dolly Parton. Fonda and Tomlin worked with the singer in the 1980 comedy 9 to 5. At the 2017 Emmys, the trio reunited on stage as award presenters. Trying to get Parton on Grace & Frankie has been a difficult feat. “She’s so busy. She’s had the 9 to 5 musicals in London and she went over for that,” Fonda told Entertainment Tonight. Netflix will release Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings, which is an anthology series based on Parton’s iconic songs. With the final season being announced, they might try harder for a Parton appearance.
New Episodes Early Next Year
Season six of Grace & Frankie finished production over the summer. With its seventh season, Grace & Frankie will become the longest-running Netflix show with 94 episodes. This beats Orange Is the New Black, which bowed out with 91 episodes. “It’s thrilling and somehow fitting, that our show about the challenges, as well as the beauty and dignity of aging, will be the oldest show on Netflix,” co-creators Marta Kauffman and Howard J. Morris said in a joint press statement.
The folks at Netflix have also shared their thanks towards the show. “Jane, Lily, Sam (Waterston), and Martin (Sheen) have become role models for fans that span generations around the world, and we are so proud to have been a part of the show’s journey from day one. A special thanks to Marta, Howard, and the team at Skydance, who have been superb partners every step of the way,” Netflix’s VP of Original Series Cindy Holland said in a press statement. Netflix will release the sixth season of Grace & Frankie next January.
