Jane Fonda Is Proud Of Her Grandchildren’s Recent Arrest For Civil Disobedience

You know the saying ‘an apple doesn’t fall too far from its tree’? The sentiment couldn’t be truer for the grandchildren of Jane Fonda, 81, whose name is synonymous with activism. Jane’s decades-long career in activism obviously inspired her family. Evidently following in their climate-centric Grandmother’s footsteps, the two grandchildren, Malcolm, and Viva Vadim were arrested recently whilst taking part in Janes #FireDrillFriday protest, marching alongside their grandma.

A Family Affair…

The two grandchildren were among 38 arrested during the protest, which the actress-model-activist stated was related to food justice in America. In an Instagram post shared on October 10th, Fonda quoted young, Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg- “As @gretathunberg said, ‘This is a crisis. We have to act like our house is on fire, because it is.’”. Poignant words, indeed.

While some grandparents might be absolutely horrified to learn of members of their family having a brush with the law, Fonda actually shared a photo on Instagram applauding her grandson. Captioning a photo of the two, Fonda proudly announced “Greeting my grandson just leased after @firedrillfriday arrest for civil disobedience. Proud grandma.”

The Fonda/Vidam clan were not the only recognizable faces to attend the protest last Friday. Other familiar protesters and speakers included June Diane Raphel, Fonda’s on-screen daughter on Grace and Frankie, Ted Danson (who was also arrested on October 25th), Catherine Keener, Diane Lane, Piper Perabo, and comedian Paul Scheer. A speech was made by Iain Armitage, known for his role as Sheldon in Young Sheldon.

 Tactical Arrests

Fonda herself is no rookie to controversial media attention (she has, at the time of writing, 265.6K Instagram followers!), and she evidently takes advantage of her fame to help the movement rapidly gain publicity and a strong following. Malcolm and Viva were both arrested for civil disobedience, but fortunately, have been released on bail.

Fonda herself is becoming slightly more wary of dealings with police, despite her Instagram being peppered in images of her in handcuffs. It makes for a powerful image, Fonda situated at the forefront of crowds of angry citizens, who themselves are clearly very passionate about the cause, with a backdrop of the Whitehouse. She recently stated “I have to be careful not to get to a point where they’re going to keep me for 90 days because I have to begin preparing for Grace & Frankie in January. So I’m not going to get arrested every time. They give you three warnings and so I will step away at the third warning.”

According to the NY Times, “Fonda said that there was no question she benefited from her white privilege and fame, but that she was using what she had. She drives an electric car, eschews plastic, eats less red meat and has cut down on air travel — celebrities often opt for private jets, while Fonda said she flies commercial — but said she was protesting out of a need to do more.”

A Passionate Advocate!

It’s easy to imagine the discussions at family get-togethers at the Fonda household, what with Jane Fonda’s extensive history of activism. From outspoken support of feminism to visiting the West Bank in 2002 as part of a bid to prevent violence against women, to opposing the Iraq war. Since her youth, Fonda can be found across the globe, spearheading movements to support equality, freedom and human rights. All this, alongside having an extensive career in acting and modeling! Arguably, she’s done more in her 81 years, than most of the public put together.

Her current focus is environmentalism, such is the conversation of the times, and she is apparently thrilled that her Grandchildren are following suit with their enthusiasm and commitment to the cause.
