Last year, James Gunn shocked everyone when he announced he was working on the Suicide Squad reboot. With his involvement, the Missouri native now finds himself working with both major comic book film universes. While Marvel is doing just fine he’s looking to help reassemble the DCEU.
Overseeing The Future Of The Universe
James Gunn is set to be overlooking the entire DCEU going forward as a director. Director Zack Snyder once held this position until the release of Justice League. He departed from the project before reshoots took place.
Gunn was originally going to take over Phase Four of the MCU before being fired last year. “I think things are going to look very different at that point, but I think the early discussions we’ve had with James [Gunn] about Vol. 3 and beyond with what we’ll call the ‘Cosmic Universe’ and the Guardians characters is very exciting. Which is why he signed up and we announced that even before Guardians Vol. 2 came out,” Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told Fandango in 2017.
Split In Half
The current DCEU is rumored to be split into two separate universes. Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey, the Aquaman sequel, and Suicide Squad reboot will continue to be connected. The Batman, which releases on June 25, 2021, is slated to be the start of another universe. Films that are rumored to be in this universe include Batgirl and Nightwing. There are talks of possibly combining both universes for a major film event. One possible way to make this work involves adapting the Convergence storyline from the comic books. In the storyline, characters from multiple universes are forced to fight for their own survival.
Earlier this year, Warner Bros. had a different story to tell. “We all feel like we’ve turned a corner now. We’re playing by the DC playbook, which is very different than the Marvel playbook. We are far less focused on a shared universe. We take it one movie at a time. Each movie is its own equation and own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it’s that it always has to be about the directors,” Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich told The Hollywood Reporter.
In April, the studio unveiled Shazam!, which has a small connection to the original universe. The film managed to gain $363 million at the box office. While it’s the lowest grossing film in the DCEU, it gained rave reviews from critics. A sequel is currently in the works.
A Brand New Squad
When it comes to the Suicide Squad reboot, Gunn instantly got to work after landing the gig. “The Suicide Squad, it just instantly started flowing. I don’t think I’ve had as much fun writing a script since maybe Dawn of the Dead. That’s what this whole movie has been like,” he told Deadline. Gunn was originally offered the sequel to Man of Steel, but he turned it down. That particular film is still in the air.
Filming is set to begin this September down in Atlanta, Georgia. So far, the only actors reprising their roles are Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, Viola Davis, and Joel Kinnaman. As a reboot, this will include some newcomers thrown in the mix. David Dastmalchian will portray Polka-Dot Man while Daniela Melchior will play Ratcatcher. Idris Elba was originally set to replace Will Smith as Deadshot, but he’s set to portray an unconfirmed character. John Cena and Benicio del Toro are also rumored to join the film.
The Suicide Squad reboot will be released in theaters worldwide on August 6, 2021.
