Six years ago, Sopranos star James Gandolfini died from a heart attack. While his death was tragic, fans and co-stars celebrate his career every single day. His oldest child, Michael, is set to follow in his footsteps in a major way.
Like Father, Like Son
Michael will portray a younger Tony Soprano in HBO’s upcoming Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark. Speaking to Deadline, Michael is excited to be a part of a groundbreaking franchise.

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano. I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark,” he said.
Moving On Up
Michael got his start with acting in 2015’s Flower, which he also wrote and produced. 2018 was a big year for him with a role on Ocean’s Eight and a recurring role on HBO’s The Deuce.

He didn’t get the role of Tony Soprano handed to him, either. Just like every other actor, he auditioned for the part several times. Since he honestly looked like a younger Tony, he was offered the role.
No Saints Here
Sopranos star Vincent Pastore was thrilled to learn Michael got the part. “I love little Michael. Little Michael grew up…Jimmy’s smiling in heaven,” he told TMZ. Sopranos fans are also happy with the news. “The son taking on the mantle of an iconic character played by one of the best screen actors ever,” Twitter user KyleLimaActor said.

Michael is also working on The Boy, the Dog and the Clown, which is slated to be released this year. The Many Saints of Newark will revolve around Tony and the rest of the gang’s involvement in the 1960s Newark riots. Alan Taylor has been picked to direct the film.
