J.K. Rowling Uses Her Wealth To Build Her Own Magical World

Published

on

With humble beginnings as a poor, single mother, world-renowned Harry Potter series author J.K. Rowling has managed to work untold magic to turn herself into the highest paid author in the world. With all the money pouring in from her popular fantasy creations, there are areas in which the author does prefer to splurge.

Homes Away From Home

After the success of the first few Harry Potter books, Rowling bought a 17th century home in Edinburgh and her neighbor’s home for $1.6 million so she could knock it down and have a larger yard. Rowling also bought a 130-year-old Perthshire home for roughly $500,000 and a $10 million mansion in Tasmania. But sometimes the author still needs to get away from it all. And for J.K. Rowling, there are plenty of options.

The Richest

Magical Getaways

When Rowling isn’t writing or responding to fans, she takes her family on $15,000 cruises to the Galapagos and $6,000 a week trips to Seychelles. She also frequently vacations at a home in the Hamptons, where she and her husband once spent $76,000 a week for a vacation. But perhaps sometimes Rowling still needs to be farther away from adoring fans and the pressures of traveling. For that, she briefly turned to a transport deep in the ocean.

The Richest

Rowling’s Brief Love For A Yacht

After renting actor Johnny Depp’s 157-foot yacht, J.K. Rowling bought it from him for roughly $29 million in 2016. Despite her love for the yacht, she surprised many by turning around less than eight months later to sell it. More surprising, she did so for $9 million less than she bought it for. Maybe she decided it wasn’t a great decision after all (not every decision can be), which might be why the famous author decided to spend big bucks on getting some assistance.

The Riches

Staff To Help Make The Magic Happen

There’s no doubt J.K. Rowling is busy, which is why she hired two personal secretaries to help her with letters from fans as well as a personal assistant to help her stay on top of everything else. In addition, she has also hired a full-time bodyguard to help keep the crazed fans away. The expense of the bodyguard doesn’t include the roughly $220,000 a year she spends on home security measures, including electric fences, an electric gate, and CCTV cameras. Even Hogwarts was never so fortified.

The 42

Spreading The Magic Through Charity

In 2012, Rowling was booted from the Forbes list in part because she donates so much of her money to charity. She donates on average $160 million a year to charitable causes. Her favorite causes are children-oriented, particularly her own organization Lumos, named after the “Let there be light” spell from the Potterverse. The goal of her charity is to reunite poor and disabled children with their families. It’s refreshing to see that being a billionaire hasn’t made J.K. Rowling forget her roots.
