Is Alcohol Good For Your Heart?

Published

on

Let’s face it – people generally love alcohol. Like any substance like that though, too much alcohol, especially in large doses at a time, can severely alter your judgement, reflexes, and overall health. And every time some story comes out on the news or in the papers writing about how certain types of alcohol, or alcohol in general, can be good for your body, people go crazy with complete and utter excitement about it.

What’s better than having it be true that alcohol, something that so many people love and consume on a somewhat regular basis, is something that might actually be good for you!Well, this article is here to give you all of the details about whether or not alcohol is actually good for your heart, and the information you really need to know about it all.

According to ‘Everyday Health’ website and magazine, a moderate intake of alcohol (which means not binge drinking the nights away every weekend) can actually be good for your health. It increases the amount of good cholesterol that you have in your body, which is always a good thing to have as it reduces the amount of inflammation throughout your body.

Alcohol also works as an anticoagulant, which makes your blood stickier and ultimately will help your blood clot less. In a research study done by members of the Harvard School of Public Health, they published their findings by saying “moderate drinkers had a 25 percent to 40 percent reduction, compared with nondrinkers, in their risk of heart attack, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, and death from cardiovascular causes.” So maybe that glass of wine at dinner or a beer while watching the big game of the week isn’t so bad?

It should also be mentioned that although there have been tons of articles about how wine is healthier for you than other types of alcohol, there actually isn’t any evidence of that at all. For years there have been so many people saying that wine is healthy for you, or at least healthier for you than any other type of alcohol, and that it’s actually good to have a glass of wine at dinner a few nights a week.

Turns out that even though it is said that wine has more antioxidants in it than other types of alcohol such as beer and harder liquors, they have they same cardio-protective benefits. So for those of you who aren’t a fan of wine, there’s no need to feel bad anymore as there is the same amount of healthy ingredients in any other type of liquor you might choose to drink when it comes to the ingredients that are good for your heart.

So if you consider yourself a moderate and responsible drinker who likes to have a couple of drinks once in a while, you might actually be doing a favor for yourself in the long run. The fact that drinking alcohol might actually lead to a decrease in the liklihood that you will pass away from a heart related illness is great news for many people out there, but at the same time it is very important to make sure that you’re not overdrinking – as that can cause a whole lot more damage to other parts of your body.
