Idris Elba Playing A New Character In ‘The Suicide Squad’

Idris Elba

Following Will Smith’s exit from The Suicide Squad, Idris Elba stepped up to take his spot. Many fans assumed he would take over Smith’s role of Deadshot. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Elba will be bringing a brand new character into the world!

No Substitution Needed

The decision to not cast Elba as Deadshot was unanimously made by the studio. Having someone else take over an established role would be a bit disrespectful to everyone involved. If there is a Suicide Squad 3, Smith is free to return as the powerful sniper. Elba joined the cast after meeting with director James Gunn.

Who’s Joining The Squad?

With Deadshot out of the picture, people are wondering what character Elba could play. One character that’s been brought up by fans is Black Spider. Debuting in 1976, the character has intense skill in hand to hand combat. While’s he’s not as highly skilled as Deadshot, Black Spider knows his way around a gun. There are multiple people with the Black Spider moniker, but Eric Needham is the most popular one.

Another possible character for Elba is King Shark. Debuting in 1994, King Shark is a humanoid shark with a slew of amazing abilities. The character made its live-action debut in The Flash. King Shark was originally set to be in 2016’s Suicide Squad, but it was scrapped. “We realized it would take a lot of work, a lot of CG work. I wasn’t quite comfortable having a full CG character. We actually ended up going with Killer Croc, who turned out to be the right guy for the job,” director David Ayer said in a Twitter Q&A.

In Two Years Time

The Suicide Squad will find Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney, and Viola Davis reprising their roles. Filming is slated to begin later this year. Fans can watch the final product in theaters on August 6, 2021. Idris Elba is working on a slew of projects, including Mouse Guard and Deeper. This year, fans can see him in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and Cats.
