Hugh Jackman’s Journey to Becoming Wolverine Was Probably Not What You Expected

Published

on

Hugh Jackman is a very talented actor, who has proven that he can put in an amazing performance in an art film or a major blockbuster. What makes him such an endearing actor, though, is his down to Earth personality. He seems like the kind of guy you would meet at the grocery store, not a celebrity, which is a great quality to have. He gets this from his career background, which was quite ordinary before he became famous.

P. E. Teacher Extraordinaire

At the age of 18, Hugh Jackman found himself teaching P. E. as well as tutoring freshman students in English at the Uppingham School in the East Midlands of England. He only stayed with that job for a year before moving back to Australia, but according to several sources, he was a good teacher. He even remembers his students, as you can see from this video. His next job after university is not what you would expect.

Gym Receptionist, Pre-Superhero Muscles

After finding his passion for acting during a class that he initially took because he thought it would be easy, he enrolled in the Actor’s Centre in Sydney. Like most university students, he had to work while studying. He found a job as a receptionist at a gym called Physical Factory, even though he disliked working out. It was at this job that he got his chance to become an actor.

Random Encounter At The Gym

While working at Physical Factory, he encountered Annie Semler, the wife of Dean Semler, award-winning cinematographer. She said to him: “You’re going to be a big star. Don’t worry. It’s all going to happen so fast. Listen to me, I’m a white witch.” The next day, he signed on with agent Penny Williams.

Study Hard Now, Payoff Later

The Australian soap opera Neighbours is well known for being a launching pad for famous Australian actors, the likes of which include Russell Crowe. Hugh Jackman was offered a role with a two-year contract but decided to turn it down in favor of attending the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts in ordering to hone his acting skills first. This choice led him to become so good at acting that he regularly impressed casting directors.

Oklahoma! Lead Him to Become the Star He Is Today

After landing a few minor roles, including one in which he co-starred with his future wife, he finally became a star. Having impressed director Trevor Nunn on stage, he was given the role of Curly in the London West End production of Oklahoma! During this performance, his name became known outside of Australia for the first time, ultimately leading to him being cast as Wolverine upon recommendation from fellow Aussie, Russell Crowe. The rest, as they say, is history.
