How Sylvester Stallone Overcame His Difficult Life Story

Updated

Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone is, of course, a talented actor. But, did you know he is also a producer, director, and screenwriter?  Before his rise to stardom, however, he led quite a difficult early life.

Stallone’s Rough Early Life

The first tragedy of Stallone’s life happened during his birth.  The actor’s unique means of speech and what appears to be a snarl on his face are iconic.  However, as famous as these features may be, what’s less known is why he has them.  That reason is an accident that occurred during his birth which caused the partial paralyzation of half his tongue, his lip, and his chin.  This made it difficult for him to talk in a way that others would call “normal”.  According to Gulf News Entertainment, when asked about his acting career, Stallone said: “I didn’t think I was going to.  When I would try to get jobs in commercials, the director would go, ‘What are you saying, what language is that?’ I knew it was bad when Arnold Schwarzenegger said, ‘You have an accent.’ I go, ‘I have an accent? Excuse me, what?’ It’s true. Arnold and I should open up a school for speech lessons. It would be perfect.”

However, despite his “accent” initially being an obstacle, Stallone’s unique voice has become an iconic and beloved part of the actor’s image.

Growing up in New York City, young Stallone was bullied and his father was reportedly abusive.  All of this caused him to become filled with rage and he often behaved dangerously.  Stallone told The Chicago Tribune that he’d sit and swat flies off cars with a lead pipe, I’d paint the house black, hack up Santa Claus, fire arrows from a classroom window, jump off a roof with an umbrella and break my arm.”

His childhood was obviously not a pleasant one.  At the age of 15, he said, he was told his brain was dormant.  After all of this, many people might be inclined to give up on ever living a fulfilling life but those people are not Sylvester Stallone!  When he was told his mind was no good, he decided to start bodybuilding.  If you look at the classic movies that made Stallone famous like Rocky or Rambo, it’s pretty easy to see the fruits of his labor.  The man was ripped.

Success Doesn’t Come Without Struggle

Stallone spent years pursuing an acting career.  For a really long time, however, he had very little success.  He was only getting small roles and was utterly broke.  Oftentimes, he found himself doing odd jobs in order to support himself and out of desperation he even starred in an erotic film titled Party At Kitty And Stud’s (don’t go trying to find it though— it was never released).

Six years after that incident, Stallone finally found the success he was looking for.  In 1976, he wrote and starred as the main character in Rocky.  The movie followed an underdog boxer who has quite a lot in common with Stallone himself.  It was a smash hit that started him down the path to stardom.

Now, this story, unfortunately, doesn’t end with a happily ever after. Stallone still had to go through a lot of stuff since he met with success.  He divorced his wife, met the lifelong challenge of having a child with autism, and more recently lost his other son to atherosclerosis in 2012.

However, no matter how hard tragedy tries to tear him down, Stallone remains an amazingly successful actor.  Despite the original Rocky franchise having ended years ago, Stallone has taken up the role again the Creed movies where Rocky is a mentor to the protagonist.  The first Creed came out in 2015 andCreed II came out in 2018. Stallone is also playing John Rambo once again in Rambo: Last Blood which will come out in September of 2019.
