It’s July, which means it’s time for sun and fun, right? Well, some people would rather sit at home and have a good scare. Luckily, Amazon Prime always has those fans covered with their monthly additions. Here are five great horror films slated to hit the service this month.
On July 14, No Vacancy will arrive on Amazon Prime. Also known as The Helpers, this film follows friends discovering terror during a regular hotel stay. The film is directed by Chris Stokes, who is best known for his work in 2004’s cult classic You Got Served. No Vacancy stars national radio host Jojo Wright and Tyler Perry’s House of Payne star Denyce Lawton.
On July 23, horror fans will be greeted with the Hellboy reboot. This is one of the fastest jumps to Amazon Prime for a box office film. Released in April, the film gained praise for the performances of David Harbour and Milla Jovovich. For Jovovich, this film was perfect following her run in the Resident Evil film series.
“I kind of felt like Jim from The Office, who was like, ‘What do I do with all this useless information in my head?’ Because I have so much experience doing action films and can bring so much to the table with wire work or helping the visual team and in post-production. But after Resident Evil, I was like, ‘It’s done. My franchise is over. My career as an action hero is over. What am I going to do with all this useless information in my head now, because I can’t use it for anything else but another action film?,” she told Stack.
The Haunting Of Sharon Tate
The Haunting of Sharon Tate will arrive on July 29. This horror thriller revolves around the Tate murders of 1969. In this flick, Hilary Duff portrays beloved actress Sharon Tate. “Although she’d been raised and groomed around Disney, she’s a very sympathetic, kind and good-natured person. Honestly, it was her smile, the way she smiled reminded me of the way Sharon Tate smiled,” director Daniel Farrands told The Hollywood Reporter. The film earned Duff the Best Actress award at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. At the same ceremony, the film won the awards for Best Director and Best Horror Film.
For horror film enthusiasts, Rosemary’s Baby is a timeless classic coming to Amazon Prime on July 31. Released in 1968, the film earned Ruth Gordon Oscar and Golden Globe wins for Best Supporting Actress. For actress Mia Farrow, Rosemary’s Baby is one of her finest projects. “I think it’s a great movie. And I don’t think I’ve done another. I know I didn’t get another role as fine, that asked as much of me,” she said in a Criterion Collection interview. In 2014, Rosemary’s Baby was placed in the National Film Registry.
1995’s Twelve Monkeys revolves around one man’s hunt to find a cure for a horrendous disease. The movie was inspired by the 1962 short film La Jetée, which was directed by Chris Marker. 12 Monkeys earned Brad Pitt his first Golden Globe win for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. For director Terry Gilliam, Pitt was the perfect choice to play Twelve Monkeys founder Jeffrey Goines. Pitt, who was being praised for his good looks, wanted to do something drastically different. “We caught Brad at a perfect time in his career, I think, because, you know, his face has been all over the place….He was very bold in saying “I don’t want to look like Brad Pitt” and we went along with it — and those blue eyes are gone. They don’t even look at us in the same way. We worked very hard at changing his look,” Gilliam told Film Scouts.
