Celebrities are no strangers to the spotlight. While most of the time they make headlines to promote their up and coming movie or their album that is about to drop, sometimes it’s to report on their bad behavior. Because at the end of the day, they’re only human and they make mistakes just like the rest of us. How many of these Hollywood jailbirds did you know had run-ins with the law?
1. Amanda Bynes
Over the past few years, Amanda Bynes has unfortunately made more headlines for her legal troubles than for her acting. In April 2012, the She’s the Man star reportedly sideswiped a police car in West Hollywood around three in the morning.
She was taken into custody after refusing to take a drug test or breathe into a breathalyzer. Two months later, Bynes was charged with driving under the influence in response to her arrest. She tweeted to President Obama in a plea for help, saying, “I don’t drink. Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don’t hit and run. The end.”
2. Bruno Mars
The mastermind behind the song “Uptown Funk,” Bruno Mars, was arrested while partying in Las Vegas back in September 2010. He was caught with a few grams of illegal substances in his possession while in the bathroom of the Hard Rock Hotel.
After pleading guilty, he was given a fine of $2,000 and was sentenced to drug counseling and community service. Mars spoke of the incident years later and said, “I was in f****** Vegas. I wasn’t thinking.” We suppose it’s called Sin City for a reason? The singer later added that his arrest showed him that “it can all be taken away.”
3. Heather Locklear
Recognized by most for her role as Amanda Woodward on CW’s Melrose Place, Heather Locklear will always be remembered for her blinding smile and all-American charm. But in the past few years, she has been plagued by a few run-ins with the law.
The charges she faces (eight misdemeanor battery offenses and resisting police officers) stem from two different altercations that occurred in 2018. Both times, police were called to her property for domestic disturbance, and Locklear reportedly became combative with officials during her arrest. As part of her treatment, she was checked into a facility and was later placed on 5150 psychiatric hold.
4. Hugh Grant
1995 was a tough year for rom-com icon, Hugh Grant who found himself at the center of a scandal. After being caught engaging in promiscuous activity with an escort in his car, Grant was placed on probation, was made to pay an $1,000 fine, and attend an AIDS education programme.
To make matters worse, at the time the incident occurred, the actor was in a relationship with Austin Powers actress, Elizabeth Hurley. In an interview with Jay Leno on NBC’s Tonight Show, the British actor said, “I’ve done an abominable thing, and she [Liz Hurley] has been amazing about it.”
5. Mel Gibson
The Passion of the Christ director and star of classics like Braveheart and Lethal Weapon, Mel Gibson was arrested in July 2006 after he was pulled over for speeding and failed a breathalyzer test, proving to officers that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol.
At the time of his arrest in Malibu, California, Gibson was recorded spouting a slew of anti-Semitic remarks. He later checked himself into rehab and issued a public apology to the Jewish community, saying, “I am in the process of understanding where those vicious words came from during that drunken display, and I am asking the Jewish community, whom I have personally offended, to help me on my journey through recovery.”

6. Aaron Carter
According to CNN, on July 15, 2017, “I Want Candy” singer Aaron Carter was arrested in Cornelia, Georgia under the suspicion of driving under the influence and for having marijuana on hand. Floyd Canup, the sheriff’s captain of Habersham County was quoted saying Carter was “driving all over the road.”
The singer, however, denied the claims that he was under the influence of alcohol, telling Entertainment Tonight that he doesn’t drink due to a medical condition. He said, “I’ll occasionally have a sip of a beer or something like that, but I can’t even drink IPAs.” He also added that the car he was driving was a “very cheap” vehicle he bought for himself and his girlfriend to visit club appearances, as he has a fear of flying following September 11.
7. Matthew McConaughey
Unlike many of the Hollywood jailbirds on this list, Dazed and Confused legend, Matthew McConaughey claims he doesn’t regret his arrest one bit. When his neighbors called the cops to file a noise complaint in 1999, authorities arrived at McConaughey’s home to see him playing the bongo drums… naked.
They arrested him for possession of marijuana on top of resisting arrest. Though the drug offenses were eventually dropped, McConaughey spent nine hours in jail until he was released on a $1,000 bond. Speaking of the incident, the actor said, “What’s wrong with beating on your drums in your birthday suit? I have no regrets about the way I got there.”
8. Justin Bieber
The “One Less Lonely Girl” singer, Justin Bieber was arrested in Jan, 2014 in Miami Beach after he was caught drag racing while under the influence and with an expired license. He was pulled over around four in the morning and allegedly tried to resist arrest.
Speaking to Complex magazine after the fact, Bieber said, “The police just wanted press. I was never speeding; I was never drag racing.” He added, “The cop supposedly wanted to be famous for arresting celebrities, and someone had heard him say that prior to that. I wasn’t drinking. I blew the thing and I had 0.01.” Hmm…
9. Rose McGowan
Drama series, Charmed star Rose McGowan ran into trouble with the law back in 2017 after she left her wallet behind on a flight to Washington D.C. When cleaning staff recovered the wallet, they found two bags of cocaine inside of it. She didn’t realize it until she received a message from an unknown person.
McGowan explained to The New Yorker that she later received a direct message from an unknown user on Instagram saying, “You left your wallet on your Saturday flight with your 2 bags of coke.” Fearful, she waited months to respond to the accusation. Some nine months later, McGowan pleaded not guilty to the charges of drug possession.
10. Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton has been arrested a number of times and we suppose all that practice looking good in paparazzi’s weirdly-angled shots has helped her master how to make the best of something as unflattering as a mugshot. The socialite’s first run-in with the law dates back to 2006.
Hilton was arrested for a DUI and her license was suspended. Then after disregarding its suspension and getting pulled over while on the road, Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in jail. But in true privileged fashion, she spent less than a week behind bars and finished the remainder of her sentence in the comfort of her own home.

He later went to county jail and rehab but was then arrested once more in 2001 after police found him wandering the streets of Culver City, CA barefoot and with traces of drugs in his blood.

16. Nicole Richie
The Simple Life icon, Nicole Richie’s December 2006 arrest is one law enforcement officials call “very lucky.” The socialite-turned-fashion mogul was arrested in Burbank, California after she was caught driving in the wrong direction in the carpool lane of the freeway. She was alleged to be under the influence of alcohol.
After pleading not guilty to a DUI, Richie admitted to having used both Vicodin and marijuana before getting in the car. She was sentenced to four days in jail but only ended up staying for 82 minutes thanks to overcrowding. Looking back on her arrest, she wrote in a letter for Lena Dunham’s website, “As much as I have to look at those moments and learn from them, as we all do, it’s important for me to have gratitude for that time, too. Not shame.”
17. Natasha Lyonne
Most of America recognizes Orange Is the New Black actress, Natasha Lyonne in an orange jail suit, which isn’t so far off considering she has had a few run-ins with the law. In 2001, for example, Lyonne was arrested for driving under the influence.
Three years later, she was charged with trespassing and harassing her neighbor and their dog. She also had a bout of drug addiction that led to severe health issues like a collapsed lung, heart infection, and liver disease. 18. Michelle Rodriguez

Speaking of her sentence, she said, “I’m really glad that the judge wasn’t blinded by you know, the kinda illusion of the actress. I’m kinda glad you know, cause I’m human.” Rodriguez was later sentenced to a six-month jail term for violation her probation.
19. Reese Witherspoon
Oscar-winning actress, Reese Witherspoon’s words went viral after she and her husband were arrested in 2013. She so infamously told a traffic police, “Do you know my name? You’re about to find out who I am. You’re about to be on national news.”
Certainly not her proudest moment, the commotion arose after Witherspoon displayed disorderly conduct to a state trooper who was giving her husband, Jim Toth the walk-and-turn sobriety test on suspicion that he was driving under the influence. The actress was released after her arrest and apologized for her behavior, saying, “I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said.”
Pawn Stars fan favorite, Chumlee has had his fair share of run-ins with the law. It all began in March 2016 when sexual assault charges were made against the TV personality. While the charges were eventually dropped because of insufficient evidence, it prompted police to obtain a search warrant on his house.
What they found there got him into even more trouble. Police uncovered 11 firearms – only four of which were registered – and enormous quantities of drugs and paraphernalia. Chumlee faced one weapon charge among 19 different drug charges. He was held on $62,000 bail and agreed to three years of counseling and probation.

Speaking about that period in her life, the actress told People Magazine, “We thought, ‘work hard, play hard.'” It seems her party girl ways eventually took a turn for the worse and not long after her DUI, she was placed in a psychiatric ward on 5150 hold for blacking out on drugs and threatening to hurt herself. She explained her breakdown as being the result of “enormous pressure.”

He was arrested for possession of prescription drugs (which he didn’t have a prescription for) and marijuana. He was ordered to pay a fine of $540 and received three different one-year suspended prison sentences.
After Culkin’s arrest made headlines, America’s perception of the young and innocent Kevin McCallister was muddied. Culkin, on the other hand, had something else to say about his story in the media. He told The Guardian that people were not right to be worried, saying, “I was not pounding six grand of heroin every month or whatever. The thing that bugged me was tabloids wrapping it all in this weird guise of concern. No, you’re trying to shift papers.”

After spending one day behind bars, Hammer was released on a $1,000 bail. While arrest isn’t something people typically show off, Hammer left his fans with a present on Instagram from his journey down south. In 2018, seven years after the incident, he posted a photo of his mugshot to his social media with the caption, “It might not be Thursday, but this throwback seems worth it… #godblesstexas.” At least he has a good sense of humor about it!
