Here’s What’s Next For Your Favorite ‘Game of Thrones’ Stars

Goodbyes are never easy, especially after a decade of emotional investment. But that’s what Game of Thrones fans must endure. In the wake of its departure, the show leaves a difficult void to fill. But what about the actors? Let’s take a look at what life post-Game of Thrones looks like for the show’s major characters.
Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark)
Based on the past few months, it’s safe to say Sophie Turner isn’t leaving the spotlight anytime soon. On top of repeatedly going viral for her social media presence (often involving wine), Turner recently married famous singer Joe Jonas (with Maisie Williams as one a maid of honor!).
Between her hilarious Instagram stories and shotgun Las Vegas wedding, it’s clear Turner isn’t afraid to have fun. But that doesn’t mean she isn’t serious about work. The English actress has a handful of film projects lined up. She was cast as Jean Grey, the leading star in the X-Men film, Dark Phoenix. She also recently completed production of Broken Soldier. In it, she plays Penelope, a friend to a soldier dealing with PTSD. And it doesn’t stop there. Turner will star as Juliane in Girl Who Fell From The Sky, a true story about the lone survivor of a 1971 plane crash. Needless to say, fans of Sophie’s won’t have to wait very long before seeing her on screen again.
Kit Harrington (Jon Snow)
Last year, Harrington married Rose Leslie, who played Ygritte on Game of Thrones. But since wrapping GOT, the actor seems to be shaking things up a bit…and taking a step back. First, he switched gears by taking things off the screen and onto the stage. In 2018, he starred in the stage play True West in London. Then he played the voice of Eret in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World. But for fans wondering when they’ll see him act on screen again: it may be a little while.
Jon Snow may know nothing, but Harrington does know that he’s ready to rid himself of the character. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harrington explained that he would, “like to step away and enjoy the obscurity, cut [his] hair, make [himself] less recognizable as the character, and go do and some other things with a completely new look and tone.” In other interviews, he also revealed he doesn’t have much interest in playing any type of action hero.
Maisie Williams (Arya Stark)
Arya has always been a Game of Thrones fan-favorite. She’s one of the characters who essentially grew up on the show. Seeing her go from a young girl to a bad-ass woman has certainly positioned her to be an easy-to-root-for actor in real life. The good news is that fans can see her in a new movie, The New Mutants. The bad news is that they’ll have to wait almost a year until it’s released on April 3, 2020. The movie is a spin-off of the X-Men franchise. Since the Stark sisters are best friends in real life, it’s only fitting they have similar projects in the works. Maisie will also be the voice of Cameron McCloud in Gen: Lock, an animated TV series. She is currently filming The Owners, a thriller about a group of friends planning a burglary that gets out of hand.
Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen)
It’s time for Khaleesi, The Mother of Dragons and Breaker of Chains to break-free from her role as Daenerys. Moving from one franchise to another, Clarke is set to play Qi’Ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story. She was also recently named the face of Dolce and Gabbana’s new campaign, “The Only One”. There are a couple more films in the works, too. Clarke will play Kate in Last Christmas, a romantic comedy based in London. The movie debuts November 8, 2019, and also stars Henry Golding, from Crazy Rich Asians. Before the end of the year, fans will also have the chance to see Clarke in Above Suspicion, a true story about the first FBI agent arrested for murder.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister)
What does Nikolaj plan to do now that his days of slaying kings are over? Quite a handful of things, as it turns out. The Danish actor has three films in production. The first, released this past May, is a crime-thriller titled Domino and is set in the Netherlands. He plays the role of Christian, an officer seeking justice for the murder of his partner. His other two films seem to follow a loosely similar theme. There’s the Suicide Tourist, a foreign drama/mystery about a strange murder investigation. Then there’s the action film The Silencing. In this movie, set to release by 2020, Coster-Waldau plays a retired hunter determined to track down his daughter’s murderer.
Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister)
Tyrion drinks and he knows things, but does Dinklage know what his plans are post-Game of Thrones? Turns out he’ll be keeping plenty busy thanks to the many projects he has lined up. Dinklage will take part in a couple of film sequels. He is the voice of the Mighty Eagle in Angry Birds Movie 2 and plays the role of Phil Betterman in The Croods 2. Additionally, Dinklage plans to play Shorty in The Thicket, a crime drama, and star in The Dwarf, a medieval period piece. Unfortunately, both films were just announced so there aren’t any release dates for them yet.
After eight seasons and ten years of watching these talented actors excel in respective Game of Thrones roles, it’s difficult to say goodbye. But knowing they (and we) have plenty of new projects to look forward to helps ease the pain (some of it, anyway).
