Fans of The Witcher are in love with Henry Cavill’s performance. As expected, this beloved role meant getting ripped. To play Geralt of Rivia, the British actor had to spend plenty of time in the gym. Now, he’s sharing some of his biggest secrets to getting a fit body.
Let’s Pump You Up
The actor laid down his tips in an interview with Men’s Health. For his lower self, Cavill does three sets of 10 reps of Romanian deadlift with hip circle and hyperextension on glute hams machine. For his arms, Cavill uses oblique static hold, 3-way shoulder raise, and half-iso alternating dumbbell curl. With the oblique static hold, he does 3 sets of 30-second holds per side. The 3-way shoulder raise finds Cavill doing 3 sets of 15 reps from each position. The half-iso alternating dumbbell curl will have the actor doing 3 sets of 10 reps per arm.
For Cavill, he doesn’t do these key moves in the same order. Depending on the day, they’re ideal for his specific workout. “Those are moves that we put into workouts, depending on which muscle group or muscle groups we’re working that particular day,” Cavill told Men’s Health.
A Long Journey
Growing up in Saint Helier, Jersey, Cavill wasn’t always at peak physical condition. As a kid, he was picked on for his weight. “I was a chubby kid. I could’ve very well gone down the route of just accepting my lot in life and being like, ‘I guess I’m not going to do anything,’” he told Men’s Health. Playing sports in school helped him learn to strengthen his muscles.
When it came to portraying Superman, the actor worked overtime to get the perfect look. “It was a lot of functional workouts. It was lots of kettlebells, different types of squats, sandbag stuff, goblet squats, man-makers, Olympic lifts, sled pulls,” the actor told Train Magazine. “We would train the complete body, do dumbbell stuff, bodyweight stuff, power cleans, deadlifts and push presses. A lot of it was based around a two-part, 100-rep routine that lasted about two hours — lifting very, very heavy weights.” While filming a shirtless scene in Man of Steel, Cavill was forced into a strict diet. “During that period I dropped down to about 2,500 calories a day — which was a big drop off. But the diet varied a lot,” Cavill also told Train Magazine.
Discover Your Own Path
Cavill credits personal trainer Dave Rienzi for keeping him steady for years. “My physical journey over the years has been an interesting one, with plenty of pitfalls and plenty of moments of reward. I’ve been reflecting on them a lot recently and I’ve been very fortunate to work with some fantastic minds,” Cavill said on Instagram. Rienzi is best known for getting Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in shape for his movies. When it comes to working out, Cavill wants fans to know they don’t have to emulate others at the gym. “The most important thing to remember is that you are you. Everyone has a different genetic makeup, everyone is at a different stage of fitness or training or even has a different amount of calories going in. So you do you, and just make sure that every workout is as hard as you can do it,” Cavill told Men’s Health.
The actor will be quite busy in the gym while filming the second season of The Witcher, which was renewed before season one aired. The show’s next season is currently being filmed in Eastern Europe. New stories will be released through the popular streaming service sometime in early 2021.
