Netflix’s ‘The Haunting of Hill House’ To Have A Much Scarier Second Season

Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House gave Netflix viewers a scare when it premiered last fall. As expected, the streaming service immediately gave the show a second season. While filming hasn’t begun yet, show creator Mike Flanagan promised more chills for round two.

Something Screwy Going On

The Haunting of Bly Manor will be based on Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw. In the story, a governess is taking care of two children (Miles and Flora) in an estate. After some suspicious incidents, the governess believes the estate is haunted. The Turn of the Screw originally appeared in a serial format before being released on its own. With 28 film and movie adaptations, this is the most adapted work in James’ bibliography. Recently, Juno Award winner Floria Sigismondi directed a film adaptation titled The Turning.

In an interview with Birth.Movies.Death, Flanagan discussed using James’ work for season two.  “We’re looking at all the ghost stories of Henry James as the jumping-off point for the season, so it very much is a whole new deal. It’s a cool way to expand on some of the things I loved about Season 1, but within the framework of a new story, without having to be restrained by the decisions we made last time,” Flanagan told Birth.Movies.Death.

The show creator believes this season will be more haunting than the last. “For Henry James fans, it’s going to be pretty wild, and for people who aren’t familiar with his work, it’s going to be unbelievably scary. I already think it’s much scarier than season one, so I’m very excited about it,” Flanagan also told Birth.Movies.Death.

Who’s Returning From Season One?

Season two of Haunting will have some familiar faces. Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Henry Thomas, and Kate Siegel will return as new characters. Pedretti will portray the governess Dani while Jackson-Cohen will portray a man named Peter. Currently, roles for Thomas and Siegel are being kept under wraps. Thomas and Pedretti’s performances from season one earned them Saturn Award nominations. Pedretti will be pulling double duty on Netflix. Aside from The Haunting, she’ll be featured in season two of psychological thriller You. Netflix picked up You after Lifetime passed on the second season.

Another thing returning for season two is the practical effects. “That’s part of the DNA of The Haunting for me—that old-school approach to the ghosts. In particular, we’re having an enormous amount of fun talking about how to take some of the ideas from season one about hidden ghosts and things like that and find new gears for them this time. It’ll be the same type of story, and we’ll treat the ghosts very much the same way,” Flanagan told Birth.Movies.Death.

Filming for season two will begin in September. New episodes will appear on Netflix next year. After filming, Flanagan will work on his other project for the streaming service. Titled Midnight Mass, this series follows a priest bringing some surprising events to a small town. Haunting executive producer Trevor Macy will co-produce the show. The seven-episode series has no release date yet. This will be Flanagan and Macy’s sixth project together. The two began working with each other on 2014’s Oculus.

On October 15, The Haunting of Hill House will arrive on Blu-ray and DVD in time for Halloween. This release will feature director’s cuts of the episodes “The Bent-Neck Lady,” “Silence Lay Steadily,” and “Steven Sees a Ghost.” These three episodes and “Two Storms” will include commentary from Flanagan. Netflix subscribers will keep a copy around in case their Internet goes down.
