Oh, to marry a royal. Not just any royal, either. When Meghan Markle met the former Prince Harry — sixth in line to the British throne — she must’ve been over the moon. However, becoming a member of the British Royal family is not without its challenges. Eventually, Meghan and Harry made the almost unprecedented move to distance themselves from the monarchy.
With a little one to bring up, their lives have altered significantly since the move to Canada, and then sunny LA. Let’s take a look at some of the royal rules that Harry, Meghan, and Archie have put behind them.
What’s in a Name, Anyway?
Centuries of Royal tradition, apparently. British tradition dictates that when a Royal couple conceives and the time comes to name their baby, they must pick from a small range of historically monarchical names. Customarily paying tribute to their ancestors, names like George, Charles or Edward are typically the order of the day.
The young ex-Royal couple has already flouted this custom, naming their child Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Quite the mouthful, as many royal names are, but not quite in keeping with the rules. With their next baby, they’ll be entirely free from the constraints of royal baby names! Given the newfound freedom, who knows, what’ll be next? Apple Mountbatten-Windsor, perhaps?
Wave Goodbye to the Royal Wave, Archie.
Yes, perhaps a minor aspect of the overwhelming lives of the royal British children, but nonetheless, Archie (and Meghan and Harry) will no longer be required to wave in that oh-so-posh British manner. Fingers pressed together, the fairly restrained and pious hand wave that is so quintessentially Queen-like is certainly no fun for a toddler.
Meghan and Harry must be super relieved that they don’t have to teach Archie “The Wave”. While it has become slightly less static over time, it is still expected that the tradition is honored to an extent within the family.
Super Strict to Super Chill
Furthermore, Archie is no longer obliged to learn the usual royal etiquette- strict social rules popular with the British aristocracy, and simply unavoidable for the royal family itself.
Bowing and curtseying are mandatory for royal kids (even to their great Grandmother, the Queen!). So is dressing formally, behaving in a mouse-quiet manner, and generally being ‘seen but not heard’, as the out-dated Victorian saying goes.
Er, maybe that one’s best left in Victorian times… For little Archie, his new life in laid-back LA will suffer no such constraints! Free from all royal expectations, he will be allowed to run, jump, and play around in the mud like other kids.
Archie’s Toybox is About to Get WAY Better
Now, this may seem a bit mean. But as tradition goes, when a young royal receives a gift (and believe us, they get a lot), it’s actually up to Her Majesty The Queen to decide which gifts stay, and which go. Okay, at face value this seems a little harsh. However, considering the hundreds of toys and gifts bestowed on the little royals annually (Prince George was given 610 gifts in 2014, according to People), they simply can’t keep them all.
Well, next time Archie’s birthday swings around, guess what? He’ll be keeping all his gifts! There’ll probably still be too many to realistically keep, but truthfully with such charitable parents as Harry and Meghan, what’s not wanted will certainly be donated.
Archie is just a toddler at the moment, and little does he know that his life has drastically changed! For better or better or worse, it’s too early to say. But, his new life in the suns-flashed Golden State is sure to be a lot different.
