Gordon Ramsay is the most loved and well-known chefs in modern entertainment. Not only is he a successful restauranteur, but an acclaimed T.V. star with several successful shows including Hell’s Kitchen, The F Word, Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, MasterChef, and Hotel Hell. Now, Ramsay is taking his T.V. career in a different direction. Rather than pursuing another reality series, he’s partnered with National Geographic to produce an educational series on food around the world. So far, Ramsay fans have been in love with the Nat Geo program. However, the show’s debut episode made American fans’ stomachs churn rather than their mouths water. Here’s what you missed in the first episode of Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted and why it made so many viewers upset.
Gordon Ramsay Chooses Experimental Dishes For New Show
Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted has been a great success for both Ramsay and National Geographic. They have eight episodes filmed and plan to release them between July 21st and August 25th. The premiere went viral on Twitter, with plenty of positive responses from around the world. Viewers learned about the many different cultural cuisines and got to watch Ramsay climb mountainsides to talk about the native produce and ways of life for those in the food and farming industries. One of the dishes he sampled, however, did not sit well for many American fans. While in Peru, Ramsay sampled a roasted guinea pig. The fuzzy rodents are a staple in Peru; however, most Americans see guinea pigs as strictly pets. Fans of Ramsay were very upset to see their beloved pets roasted over a fire on his new show, and made sure he knew it in the Twitter comments.
Ramsay Defends His Guinea Pig Feast
American fans took to Twitter to share their disgust and heartbreak over the guinea pig featured on Ramsay’s first episode. One fan tweeted, “I realize people eat different things all over the world… But being a guinea pig owner and lover I can’t watch Gordon Ramsey’s new show. Those poor sweet pigs.” Ramsay, on the other hand, told fans that they simply didn’t understand. He advocated for skeptical viewers to give the delicacy a chance, comparing it to suckling pig in taste. “You do not know what you’re missing,” Gordon told fans and critics, “I am telling you now, delicious.” In the episode, the guinea pig he samples is roasted and seasoned in traditional Peruvian style. Guinea pig is served throughout the country and is considered a highly nutritious meat source. It is typically served with roasted vegetables and is a common family meal. Guinea pigs are rarely kept as pets in the region but are common livestock. And, they are commonly found in restaurants throughout the Andean region. As much as Gordon Ramsay may wish to serve this dish in his restaurants, he has received significant backlash from American fans.
Ramsay Won’t Serve Guinea Pig In The U.S. Any Time Soon
Gordon Ramsay has restaurants all over the world, featuring rare cultural delicacies of all kinds. However, he promises to never serve guinea pig on any American menu. He stated in an interview, “I can’t feature roasted guinea pig on my menus here in the US. I would be taken down.” While Ramsay may not be able to serve such a controversial food in the U.S., there are plenty of restaurants that do. The dish is called “cuy” in Peru and can be found in some Peruvian restaurants in big cities like New York. It’s unlikely that any American will take Ramsay’s advice and try the delicacy, but fans are hopeful for more Gordon Ramsay: Uncharted episodes this summer.
