‘Gladiator 2’ Moves Forward With Ridley Scott In The Director’s Chair

Published

on

Back in 2000, Gladiator became a box office smash with $457 million made worldwide. The historical flick also made an overnight star out of Russell Crowe, who earned an Oscar for his performance. 18 years after its release, Hollywood is looking to revisit this world soon.

A Hero Will Rise

It was revealed that Ridley Scott will direct the upcoming sequel to Gladiator. Scott, who directed the original, is also known for his work in Thelma & Louise and Aliens. The director is currently focusing on his forthcoming television series Raised by Wolves.

Dreamworks LLC & Universal Pictures

Work on Gladiator 2 is slated to begin shortly. Looking at his IMDB might show a different picture, though. Scott has countless projects lined up next year, including a TV series adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Defying An Empire

Scott isn’t the only name attached to this project. Writer Peter Craig has been brought on board to deliver a fantastic script. Originally starting out as an actor, Craig has found himself working along huge names over the years. He was writing credits in The Town and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 and 2.

Dreamworks LLC & Universal Pictures

Craig wrote the script for Top Gun: Maverick, which is slated for a 2020 release.

Lucius Is Safe

Upon hearing news of a confirmed sequel, fans pointed towards the insane script for the original proposed sequel. Musician Nick Cave delivered a script filled with time travel, questionable resurrections, and the Pentagon. The studio rejected the script and placed the sequel on the shelf for years.

Dreamworks LLC & Universal Pictures

This forthcoming Gladiator sequel will be a bit saner than hopping through time. It will focus on Lucius, who was the nephew of Commodus. As far as casting news is concerned, Russell Crowe probably won’t be involved. His character Maximus died at the end of the first film. They could, however, bring him back in flashbacks. More news on this movie will be unveiled soon.
