George R.R. Martin Drops New Information On ‘Game Of Thrones’ Prequel

With Game of Thrones finally done, fans are wondering about its forthcoming prequel. The pilot for the series has already begun filming in Belfast. Fortunately, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin has delivered some surprising details about the show.

A True Ensemble

While Naomi Watts was originally cast as the lead, Martin ensures everyone that its an ensemble affair. “I hesitate to use the word ‘lead. As you know for Game of Thrones, we never even nominated anybody for lead actress or lead actor [during awards season] until recently; it was always for supporting [categories] because the show is such an ensemble. I think that will be true for this show too. We don’t have leads so much as a large ensemble cast,” he told Entertainment Weekly. Watts is playing a charming socialite that holds a dark secret. Other talent confirmed for the show are Golden Globe-winning actress Miranda Richardson and Tony-nominated actor Alex Sharp.

The Lannisters Are Away

Those expecting to see the Lannisters in action will be disappointed. This prequel series won’t feature the famous family. Fortunately, another major family from the books will present.“The Lannisters aren’t there yet, but Castlery Rock is certainly there; it’s like the Rock of Gibraltar. It’s actually occupied by the Casterlys — for whom it’s still named after in the time of Game of Thrones,” Martin told Entertainment Weekly. In the books, House Casterly of Casterly Rock was originally founded by huntsman Corlos. He controlled the spot until Lann the Clever came along. Many rumors surfaced about how Lann got rid of the townspeople. Some say he drove them out by having lions barge into the castle. Another rumor stated that he turned them against each other in a bloody battle.

A Plethora Of Kingdoms

Most Game of Thrones fans know about the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. With this prequel taking place 5,000 years before the beloved HBO series, that number will skyrocket. “If you go back further then there are nine kingdoms and 12 kingdoms, and eventually you get back to where there are a hundred kingdoms — petty kingdoms — and that’s the era we’re talking about here,” Martin told Entertainment Weekly. With 100 small kingdoms present, fans will get to watch as they eventually get overtaken. While the number is large, fans will probably be thoroughly introduced to a few additional kingdoms.

What’s In A Name?

To Martin, The Long Night is the perfect title for this prequel. Unfortunately, the network wasn’t sure about it. “HBO has informed me that the Jane Goldman pilot is not (yet) titled THE LONG NIGHT. That is certainly the title I prefer, but for the moment the pilot is still officially UNTITLED. So…mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa. Elsewise, the pilot is coming along well, with casting falling into place,” he stated in his blog back in November.

In the books, The Long Night delivered a lengthy winter over the land. The White Walkers tried to make winter permanent but were defeated. This moment led to the construction of the Wall and the formation of the Night’s Watch. HBO used The Long Night as the title of the third episode of season eight. That episode dealt with the battle against the Army of the Dead.

The pilot is currently being filmed under the name Bloodmoon, but that won’t be the show’s official title. Martin could get his title after all in a different fashion. “I heard a suggestion that it could be called The Longest Night, which is a variant I wouldn’t mind. That would be pretty good,” he told Entertainment Weekly.
