Will ‘Game of Thrones’ Finally Give Us Cleganebowl in Season 8?

Published

on

The famed HBO fantasy thriller Game of Thrones is on track to air its eighth and final season in 2019. Fans have already theorized several different potential plotlines, but one theory has taken over the GoT fandom: The “Cleganebowl.” This potential final battle between brothers Sandor and Gregor Clegane (better known as The Hound and The Mountain), may yet be the most incredible scene in the show’s history. Here’s why:

History Behind the Clegane Brothers

The Hound and The Mountain have a long-standing history of hatred. In Season One, it is revealed that The Hound’s disfigured face was caused by his own brother. The Mountain pushed The Hound’s face into a smoldering fire to punish him, one of many abuses inflicted upon The Hound by his brother’s hand.

In the Season Four finale, The Hound is almost killed in battle. He is last seen in the arms of Arya, who cannot bear to mercy-kill him, but must leave him in the battlefield alone. Earlier in the same season, The Mountain slays The Viper in an infamous fight but almost dies himself (if it weren’t for Cersei’s healer saving him). However, both return in Season Seven, hinting that the family feud is far from over.

Will It Be in Season 8?

Now, with Cersei calling for a trial by combat in her trial against The Faith, the theory is that The Hound is going to return to fight for King’s Landing, and The Mountain will fight for Cersei, and it is going to be a battle to the bitter end. The ultimate “Cleganebowl” might happen in the show’s upcoming season.

While the Cleganebowl theory has been around for some time, fans now have a reason to hope for its actualization in Season Eight. When asked on an Instagram Q&A what his favorite GoT scene to film was, The Mountain actor Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson replied, “It happens in season 8…so I can’t speak about it.” Fans are hoping Björnsson is referring to the final battle between Clegane brothers.

Fans Hype About Cleganebowl

GoT fans, especially members of Reddit’s r/cleganebowl subreddit are understandably ecstatic as a result of Björnsson’s comments. Many are debating who they wish to win and what other events may lead to the infamous battle.

Punch Drunk Critics

However, we won’t know for sure until Game of Thrones Season Eight airs in the summer of 2019. Stay tuned to HBO to find out how this infamous feud will end.
