One ‘Game of Thrones’ Actress Comes Forth About Her Battle With Depression

Published

Game of Thrones, arguably the most popular television show of all time, is sadly coming to a close very soon. It is in the eighth and final season, which has been watched by over 68 million people at the time of this article’s writing. However, the show has already ended for the cast and crew, who have spent the last ten years of their lives dedicated to making Game of Thrones the absolute masterpiece that it is today.

GoT Star Talks About Her Battle With Depression

Though cast members seem to all agree that it was an amazing experience, becoming that famous isn’t easy for anyone. Actress Sophie Turner, who plays lead character Sansa Stark in the show, admits that filming during her childhood and teenage years exacerbated her mental health issues. Turner was recently interviewed on Dr. Phil’s podcast Phil In The Blanks, where she talked about her struggle with depression and how fan criticism caused many issues for her: “It [my depression] only started to kind of go downhill I think when I started to hit puberty, and really puberty, though, at like 17.”

Turner said during that time in her life, when she would gain weight or have breakouts due to puberty, fans would criticize her harshly. When asked how she handled the social media criticism, Turner said, “I would just believe it…I would just say, ‘Yeah, I am spotty. Yeah, I am fat. I am a bad actress,’ and I just believed it.” Turner said the comments about her appearance made it harder for her to focus on the acting because she was worried she looked bad on camera.

Social Pressure Made It Hard For Turner To Have A Private Life

Depression often causes those suffering to withdraw into themselves. Turner expressed to Dr. Phil that during the hardest parts of filming, she struggled in her social life and often felt along. Her friends were going to college while she stayed home and worked on the show, and Turner admitted one of her only friends during that time was Maisie Williams, costarring as her sister Arya Stark on Game of Thrones. Turner said she and Maisie Williams went through some of the same symptoms of depression, and together they supported each other. In addition to feeling withdrawn, Sophie Turner explained that she had very little motivation to go out and see her friends. She said, “I would cry and cry and cry over just getting changed and having to put on clothes and be like ‘I can’t do this, I can’t go outside… I have nothing that I want to do.'”

Turner Learns To Love Herself Despite Her Battle With Depression

Though Sophie Turner struggled greatly in her formative years, she has since learned to love herself and be happy despite what people may say about her on social media. She attributes much of her healing to her friendship with Maisie, along with her supportive partner Joe Jonas. Turner mentioned her family has struggled with mental health as well, which is why she loves Dr. Phil’s show and can relate to the hardships families face when trying to turn their lives around. Fans can’t imagine why Sophie Turner would ever doubt her talent, beauty, or popularity on the show, but mental illnesses can sometimes cloud the sufferer’s judgment to see just how great they really are. Sophie has become even stronger since her days on Game of Thrones, and wants to inspire fans struggling with the same issues to persevere through the hardest of times. She is truly the hero we need as the eighth season comes to a close on May 19th.
