Disney is saying “Let it Go” to your favorite fan theories. Frozen 2, which released in theaters on November 22, 2019, has already become a smash blockbuster success for Disney. The sequel denied many fan theories made after the first film. But which theories are we talking about?
A Smash Hit
It is close to impossible for a sequel to compete against its predecessor. The sequel is never better than the first film, but Frozen 2 might be a different story. The long-awaited sequel to the 2013 hit film, Frozen 2 is breaking records at the box office. Over Thanksgiving and Black Friday weekend, the Disney film grossed $34 million.
In total, the film has earned more than $756 million in the United States since it premiered on November 22. This makes it the biggest theatrical sequel in Disney’s history. Josh Gad, who voices Olaf, posted a heartfelt message on Instagram about the purpose for the sequel.
He commented, “You will laugh, you will cry, you will cheer, and you will most likely sing. But above all else, this is a movie that was lovingly designed to be experienced on the biggest screen possible with the largest audience you can see it with. This movie represents why the cinema experience is still alive and well.”
Debunking Fan Theories
In Frozen 2, audiences learn that the King and Queen of Arendelle traveled to the Dark Sea in order to find answers about Elsa’s powers. They wanted to learn how she could possibly control them. Unfortunately, as the first film showed us, the ship went down into the ocean waters during a violent storm. Anna and Elsa’s parents were killed.
One of the most popular fan theories following the first film was that the King and Queen didn’t die. They had shipwrecked and found themselves in an African jungle. They learned how to survive in the wild and they gave birth to another famous Disney character, Tarzan.
Of course, Frozen 2 debunks this theory. The King and Queen were, in fact, killed in a sea storm. The sequel shows viewers a flashback to the storm, in which you see the couple about to drown in the sea. So, they never landed on an African island and Tarzan’s parents were some other couple with a far different history. We hate to break it to you, but Tarzan is not Anna and Elsa’s long-lost brother. Does that change your perspective on the first Frozen?
A Connection To Ariel?
Another popular fan theory suggested that the shipwreck Ariel discovers in The Little Mermaid is the remains of the ship taking Arendelle’s King and Queen on their journey. The vessel was attacked by supposedly another Disney character, Captain Hook of Peter Pan.
Frozen 2 debunks this theory by showing viewers more details of the ship. It’s not the same ship Ariel swims through in her classic Disney film. So, the two films have no shared connections between them.
Going To Rapunzel’s Wedding?
The most popular theory about Frozen is that the King and Queen left Arendelle to attend Rapunzel’s wedding ceremony to Eugene (Flynn Rider) of Tangled. Rapunzel and Eugene are spotted attending Elsa’s coronation in Frozen. If they are connected (or even related to each other), then it’s possible the King and Queen of Arendelle would attend the marriage ceremony of the princess of Corona, a neighboring kingdom.
Of course, this isn’t true. The King and Queen were on a quest to learn more about Elsa’s powers. Perhaps they were invited to Rapunzel and Eugene’s wedding, but they had a more important mission they had to complete. They had to learn more about their daughter. They wanted to help her.
Unfortunately, they died before they had a chance. How does Elsa accept this new information? You will have to watch Frozen 2 to find out.
