When it comes to the Friday the 13th franchise, Jason Lives is a timeless classic. For Tom McLoughlin, who wrote and directed the movie, this is easily his finest work. Now, the Los Angeles native is back with a brand new Jason script in hand.
A New Murderous Tale
McLoughlin went on The Pod and the Pendulum podcast to discuss working on the popular flick. He revealed that he finished working on a new script. “I finally came up with the formula for what I wanted to do and things about six months ago, and wrote the screenplay,” he said on the podcast.
Friday the 13th fans might be excited about the news, but there’s a huge roadblock in the way. “I’m stopped dead in my tracks with the lawsuit with Sean Cunningham and Victor Miller, so it’s like I can’t even show it to the studios or anybody,” he also said on the podcast.
It’s Gonna Be A Long Wait
Years following the 2009 reboot, plans for a sequel were underway with writers Mark Swift & Damian Shannon. Both writers began working with each other in the 2003 horror crossover Freddy vs. Jason. Because of that film’s success, they were picked up to write the aforementioned Friday the 13th reboot. Their sequel was slated to be called Friday the 13th: Camp Blood – The Death of Jason Voorhees.
Everything was fine until Miller and Cunningham started butting heads over the overall rights. Miller wrote the original Friday the 13th screenplay. While he left before the franchise took off, he’s known as the person responsible for Jason Voorhees. Cunningham directed the first film, which earned nearly $60 million against a $550,000 budget. In 2018, the judge decided that Miller is the rightful owner of the Friday the 13th franchise. As expected, Cunningham chose to file an appeal. The court date still hasn’t been announced yet.
This current battle doesn’t just affect future films. In 2017, Gun Media released the popular Friday the 13th: The Game on various platforms. In this game, players can either play as Camp Crystal Lake counselors or Jason Voorhees. McLoughlin helped with the game by writing the Pamela Voorhees Tapes scripts. Due to the lawsuit, future DLC of the game was halted. “We’ve now been forced to accept that the lawsuit makes future content for the game, including alternate play modes, new playable Jasons and Counselors, and new maps, unfeasible now or in the future. Although the listed content types will be affected, we remain committed to launching dedicated servers on our console platforms and providing the continued maintenance and bug fixing important to supporting our fan base,” Gun Media said in a press statement.
Get In Line, Pal
Even if everything gets settled, McLoughlin must deal with others looking to bring Jason back. Following Miller’s win, LeBron James’ Springhill Entertainment announced they were co-producing the next Jason film with Vertigo Entertainment. Weeks after the James announcement, screenwriter Clint Ford completed a prequel screenplay titled Friday the 13th: The Beginning. Unfortunately, there’s no word if Ford and James linked up to discuss things.
A Friday the 13th film would be the best way for McLoughlin to return into the public’s eye. Following Jason Lives, he’s been producing made for TV films. His last film was 2010’s The Front. In recent years, he’s been landing small acting gigs in Rock Steady Row and Extension. He recently released a documentary about possessed electronics titled An Unusual Story.
2020 will be the 40 year anniversary of the original Friday the 13th film. For fans, it’ll be depressing watching this lawsuit possibly continue during what should be a celebration.
