Why Frank Ocean Will Be Boycotting This Year’s Grammy Awards

Hip hop sensation Frank Ocean, amongst other artists are set to boycott this year’s Grammy Awards which are set to take place on 12th February 2017. As much as other artists such as Kanye West, Drake and Justin Bieber said that they were not going to attend the award show for various reasons, Frank Ocean is the one who has received the most media attention as to why he will not be attending the award show.

Frank Ocean’s decision to boycott the Grammy Awards started as early as November last year when he said that the show was very unfair in nominating people of color. He said that the show used a very outdated form of nominating artists for the award show and in some cases, even going as far as to deliberately exclude talented musicians of color who had every right to be nominated for the show. It is with these thoughts in mind that Frank Ocean decided to boycott the 2017 Grammy awards, even going as far as not submitting his long awaited sophomore album, Blonde , for nomination.

In the wake of Frank Ocean’s public decision to boycott the Grammys, David Wild and Ken Ehrlich, who are part of the show’s creative team, said they were doubtful about Frank Ocean’s motivations behind boycotting the show. They said that the real reason why Mr Ocean was not going to be attending the show was because his 2013 performance at the show was lacklustre. Frank Ocean however refuted those claims in a Tumbler post where he reiterated that he was against the lack of fair representation during the award show.

Kanye West on the other hand, said during a show in Oakland that he would not attend the Awards if Frank Ocean’s Blonde was not nominated for the Best Album of the year, taking a stand against the show’s lack of representation for artists of colour. The fact that Frank Ocean did not submit his album for nomination means that Mr West will most definitely not be in attendance. Other artists who will not be attending the show include Drake, who will be having a show in the United Kingdom on the same day, making his absence on the show more of a circumstantial one. Justin Bieber is also said that he will not be attending the show citing the lack of adequate representation of younger artists as the reason why he will not be attending. TMZ also reported that the 22 year old pop singer thought the show was no longer relevant.
