What You Should Know About The Forthcoming ‘Gossip Girl’ Revival

Updated

on

For six seasons, Gossip Girl showcased a life of the glamourous in New York City. The show has been off the air for seven years now, but people still sing its praises. Folks behind the series are bringing it back for a revival, and some details are juicy.

Jump To The Future

The revival is slated to take place years after the original show ended. A description of the series reads, “Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years.”

For producer Joshua Safran, it was all about giving a fresh update on things. “It’s just a new look at this particular society in New York, the idea being that society changes constantly. So how has this world changed, how has social media and its effect changed? All of those things allow us to look at the world 12 years on as opposed to just redoing the story. None of us are interested in just redoing a story,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. Safran was the showrunner for Gossip Girl from season one through season five. Aside from him, show creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will work on the revival.

A Whole New Crew

The show will feature a whole new group of teenagers living in the city. There’s no word if any of the original cast members will appear on the series. Following Gossip Girl‘s series finale, many of the cast members have achieved continued success. Blake Lively, who played Serena, landed roles in the films The Rhythm Section and A Simple Favor. Taylor Momsen, who portrayed Jenny, has been packing venues with her hard rock band The Pretty Reckless.

Chace Crawford, who played Nate, was doubtful a revival would happen.”It is funny to me, it’s almost become a classic now. It probably goes to show you that we shouldn’t be redoing it. I can’t be in high school anymore. That’s the thing. I don’t even know what they would do. For me personally, I would love to see everybody again and I loved everybody and I would love to work with everybody, but I don’t know if it’s necessarily a reality,” he told Entertainment Tonight back in February. Crawford earned four Teen Choice Awards for his performance on the show. He can currently be seen in the new Amazon Video series The Boys.

Where’s It Headed?

The revival will premiere on WarnerMedia’s forthcoming HBO Max streaming service. Launching in spring 2020, this service will include programming from companies such as The CW, DC Entertainment, and CNN. With 10,000 hours of content available from the start, there’s plenty to explore. The announcement of the service fits perfectly with the revival’s vision. “It’s something we’ve been talking about — Josh, Stephanie and I — for a little bit, just in terms of, ‘Is this something we want to explore?’ We’re all so in love with the original and had such an incredible time working on it, and it’s such a big part of our lives. Then the stars aligned and we had availability to jump, and Warners, obviously, it’s something they’re very passionate about. It seemed like the best time and also the best way to do it,” Safran told The Hollywood Reporter.

Aside from the revival, HBO Max will include original series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai and Tokyo Vice. As of this writing, the exact release for this series hasn’t been determined yet. Casting will begin soon.
