Five-Year Old Boy Befriends Neighbor While Army Father Deployed

Many of us know of families with a parent deployed overseas because of army service. While some of us would just stick with our immediate family members, a boy from Belleville, Illinois has befriended his neighbor while his father is off fighting for the country.

Five-year-old Brian Kelly’s dad is currently deployed in Syria. This situation left him alone with his mother. According to ABC News, Brian “befriended his neighbor Dean Cravens” father of three girls aged 16-26.

According to the Today Show, his mother Barbara Kelly said that “Brian misses his father. He’s a shy boy, and he loves his daddy. Brian is fascinated with weed whackers and lawn mowers. He says he wants to be a lawn mower man when he grows up”

Brian started to visit his neighbor’s yard after his father was deployed in Syria. He spent more and more time offering help with Craven’s gardening job. Craven said on the show that “he had more time on his hands without his dad around. He didn’t have that person.”Craven and Brian spend most days gardening and even share a common interest in sports like golf and basketball. The bond between neighbors has grown to become like a father and son, considering that Brian’s real dad is away in service. Kelly said that “if [Brian’s dad] knew what was happening, it would move him to tears.”

Molly, Cravens’ youngest daughter, tweeted on Father’s Day about their adorable friend. “This is our little neighbor. His dad is deployed in Syria and everyday he comes to the door to work with our dad. Appreciate today.”

The tweet has gone viral on the net reminding people how important it is to understand how difficult it is to be away from a father. And that there are people out there who step up just like Craven.
