Turns out Your Favorite Game of Thrones Characters Are Still Alive in the Books

Published

on

By now, being excessively affected by a character’s death on Game of Thrones has become a bit of a tradition: if you didn’t cry when Hodor died, or scream at your television during that Oberyn scene, you may be dead inside. However, with the show increasingly diverging from the books, some of our favorite characters are still very much alive and kicking on the page. Needless to say, spoilers ahead.

Hodor

Hodor’s sacrifice for Bran was one of the most heartbreaking deaths on the show. In the books, the whole of Bran’s crew is alive and well (including Jojen and Summer) and have just arrived at the Three-Eyed Raven. George R.R. Martin has said the meaning of Hodor’s name will be different in the books, so readers may be spared another “hold the door” scene.

Littlefinger

Littlefinger was a divisive character: some hated him, some thought he was the best thing in the show. If you are one of the latter, you’ll be glad to know book Littlefinger is still manipulating his way into power with Sansa in the Eyrie, safely away from Arya’s knife.

Margaery Tyrell

Most of us were sad to see Margaery go in the blast at the Sept of Baelor. In the books, she is still awaiting trial for the crimes she was accused of by Cersei. However, Cersei’s witnesses have turned against her (resulting in the “walk of atonement”) and it is implied Margaery will not be found guilty.

Catelyn Stark

In both the show and the books, Catelyn was one of the victims of Season 3’s infamous Red Wedding (RIP Robb). However, in the book, she is resurrected by Beric Dondarrion. She becomes “Lady Stoneheart,” the zombie-like new leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners, intent on revenge against the Lannisters and Boltons who wronged her.

Ramsay Bolton

In a show filled with cruel and despicable characters, Ramsay Bolton was arguably the worst of the lot. Unfortunately, in the books, he is still very much alive: as of the end of Dance of Dragons, he was settled in Winterfell and married to a decoy “Arya Stark” (actually one of Sansa’s old friends).
