Fans Plead For Johnny Depp To Come Back For ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 6’

Can you imagine watching Pirates of the Caribbean without Jack Sparrow? That might be the case for Disney’s upcoming movie Pirates of the Caribbean 6. With Depp’s mounting legal issues, Disney confirmed that they are not re-casting Depp in his signature role as Captain Jack Sparrow. Find out why fans are pleading for Johnny Depp to come back to Pirates of the Caribbean 6.

Dead Men Tell No Tales

Ever since the first Pirates of the Caribbean film was made in 2003, fans around the world have fallen in love with Captain Jack Sparrow. Inspired by a Disney amusement park ride, the film franchise has earned over $4.5 billion over five installments. Yet, it seems like audiences have started to lose interest. When Disney released 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest and 2007’s At World’s End, they received lukewarm reviews but garnered $2 billion internationally.

In 2011, On Stranger Tides gained $1 billion at the box office, but received negative reviews. Dead Men Tell No Tales grossed $795 million in 2017, but it was reportedly disappointing in terms of sales and reviews. As a result, Disney is supposedly thinking about restarting the whole series. Although Disney originally planned for Deadpool creators Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to write Pirates 6, Deadline stated they have left the project.

Curse Of The Black Pearl

Meanwhile, Depp’s life off-screen hasn’t exactly been Disney-friendly. Recently, the actor dealt with divorce proceedings with his ex Amber Heard. Evidently, he also faced assault charges for an altercation with the City of Lies’ location manager. Thus, Disney film chief Sean Bailey officially announced that the new Pirates of the Caribbean sequel won’t feature its star, Johnny Depp. About Depp’s removal from the project, Bailey told The Hollywood Reporter magazine that “we want to bring in a new energy and vitality.”

CinemaBlend reported that fans have begun several petitions to get Depp’s re-hired to the franchise. Currently, there are at least two petitions floating around the internet. Together, they have gathered almost 20,000 signatures from Depp fans. Supposedly, the Pirates producers haven’t been able to think of a proper substitute for Captain Jack Sparrow yet. Similar petitions have been circulated for Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Game of Thrones season eight remakes. Fans have even created petitions to see the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League.

At World’s End

Despite the drama, Depp is still continuing to be featured in other major film franchises. The Edward Scissorhands star is planning to reprise his part as Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 3. Even though Warner Bros. has received some calls to boycott Depp’s involvement in the project, the actor has been defended by writer J.K. Rowling and director David Yates. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Yates stood up for Depp, saying, “With Johnny, it seems to me there was one person who took a pop at him and claimed something. I can only tell you about the man I see every day: He’s full of decency and kindness, and that’s all I see.”

Johnny was also set to play the part of the Invisible Man in the doomed film Dark Universe. After that movie was scrapped, Blumhouse took control over the new production of the project. However, it’s been confirmed that Depp won’t be participating in that reboot either. Fortunately, Depp is scheduled to star in the soon-to-be-released Ciro Guerra film Waiting for the Barbarians. In the meantime, it’s uncertain if Disney will take fan’s petitions for Depp to star in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 seriously. But only time will tell!
