Gigi and Bella Hadid are among the most sought after models in recent years. With appearances at New York Fashion Week and Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, they’ve been turning heads like crazy. These facts about the supermodel sisters will give you a better look at their lives.
They Had Other Career Choices
Growing up, neither sister had aspirations of taking over the runway. Bella had her eye on being a photographer. In 2014, she began studying at the Parsons School of Design in New York City. Being around her sister led her to switch career paths. “I met with [her agency] IMG. I started modeling and was working almost every day, learning more with photographers on set than I was in school,” Bella told Glamour.
Gigi attended The New School in New York City to obtain a degree in criminal psychology. After being signed to IMG, she dropped out of school. “Although I’m so intrigued by that field of work, I think that if I would have had a career in that I would’ve still ended up working in something creative instead. Even after I’m done modeling I think I’ll always be a part of a creative process somehow,” Gigi said in an Instagram Q&A.
Fighting The Fight
Both sisters are suffering from different diseases. Bella has been battling Lyme disease since she was 15. This disease can cause joint pains and rashes. Her longtime fight with the disease was revealed in her mother Yolanda Foster’s book Believe Me. “It starts with brain fog; for a while, I couldn’t put sentences together. I’m really tired a lot. A few weeks ago, I had a big campaign shoot that I had to reschedule. It’s hard, but I push through, because at the end of the day, if you’re not working, somebody else is,” Bella told Glamour. Her brother Anwar also has Lyme disease.
In 2016, Gigi announced she was suffering from Hashimoto’s disease. This disease can cause weight gain, hair loss. and pale skin. “After discovering that I have Hashimoto’s [an autoimmune disease], I needed to eat healthy and work out. It was weird as a teenager, dealing with this when all of my friends could eat McDonald’s and it wouldn’t affect them,” Gigi told Harper’s Bazaar.
A Change Of Names
Gigi and Bella aren’t their actual names. Gigi’s real name is Jelena Noura. The name Gigi was given to her by her mother. “My mom was called that as a kid by her mother when she was younger, but only around the house. I was called that around the house when I was really young, kind of like how my mom was called it,” Gigi told Vogue. An incident at school prompted her to officially change her name. “In first or second grade, there was a girl named Helena and it got confusing with the teacher who had to call out our names, and so the teacher asked my mom, ‘If I needed to call Jelena a nickname, what would it be?’ And my mom was like, ‘I call her Gigi sometimes,’ and the name stuck,” Gigi also told Vogue. Bella had a simpler approach with the name swap. Her real name is Isabella Khair.
Going For The Gold
While Bella is a modeling extraordinaire, she’s passionate about being an equestrian. She had dreams of competing in the 2016 Olympics, but her Lyme disease prevented her from going. “Bella had to give up her lifelong dream of having a professional riding career and a shot at the Olympics due to her severe symptoms and inability to ride. This was the biggest heartbreak of her life and an extremely sensitive subject for her,” their mother Yolanda told Bravo.
