Ethan Hawke Reveals His Controversial Thoughts On Superhero Movies

Published

on

Actor Ethan Hawke has long served as one of the indie film world’s most valuable players. Knowing this, it’s no wonder why the Boyhood star has some strong opinions about the success of big-budget superhero movies.

The Icon Speaks Out

In an interview this week, Hawke spoke frankly about the trend, using blockbuster hit Logan as an example. Serving as the final chapter in the Wolverine franchise, the film went on to earn an Academy Award nomination. Hawke, however, was underwhelmed.

The New York Times

“Now we have the problem that they tell us Logan is a great movie,” he said. “Well, it’s a great superhero movie. It still involves people in tights with metal coming out of their hands. It’s not Bresson. It’s not Bergman. But they talk about it like it is.”

When Two Worlds Collide

The actor continued to explain the difference he sees between the D.I.Y. film scene and the recent wave of blockbusters. He cited the emphasis that big studios place on profit as evidence of his point.

The Cut

“I went to see Logan ’cause everyone was like, ‘This is a great movie’ and I was like, ‘Really? No, this is a fine superhero movie.’ There’s a difference, but big business doesn’t think there’s a difference. Big business wants you to think that this is a great film because they wanna make money off of it.”

Hero Fans Fight Back

In an era where there is little overlap between what wins awards and what sells theater tickets, it is rare that a mainstream production would earn such a positive response from critics. Naturally, superhero movie fans were quick to defend the growing trend on social media.

While some lambasted Hawke’s attitude, others argued that it was simply a product of the film industry evolving over time. Only time will tell which philosophy Hollywood will adopt moving forward.
