So What Exactly Goes Down At The End Of ‘The Shining’?

Published

Nearly 40 years later, The Shining still terrifies viewers both old and new. Something that always gets people talking is its wild ending. On top of that, numerous questions are somehow left unanswered. We dig deep into what happens at the end of this masterpiece.

Can’t Overlook This

When it comes to the Overlook Hotel, they probably spent a fortune on cleaning up after Jack. One thing that concerns fans is what happens next to Jack’s position. It’s obvious that the role of caretaker has been cursed.

Warner Bros.

In the book, the hotel doesn’t even get to make it to the end. It gets destroyed from a boiler explosion that kills Jack. Switching up the ending confused many fans of the book. For director Stanley Kubrick, it was part of his plan. “The ending was changed almost entirely because Kubrick found it a cliche to just blow everything up. He thought there might be something else that would be metaphorically and visually more interesting,” screenwriter Diane Johnson told Entertainment Weekly.

Fate Of The Protagonists

Along with her son Danny, Wendy managed to escape the clutches of Jack towards the end. What the two managed to do following the incident remained a mystery. With the release of Doctor Sleep, it was revealed that Danny is still recovering from the situation. Wendy, however, died from lung cancer formed from the Overlook Hotel explosion.

Since the explosion never happened in the movie, her fate is still up in the air.

Worth A Thousand Words

The strangest part of the ending involved a photo of Jack at the Overlook’s Fourth of July party. In an interview with Michel Ciment, Kubrick made a shocking revelation about that scene.

Warner Bros.

“The ballroom photograph at the very end suggests the reincarnation of Jack,” he said. In Doctor Sleep, Jack’s ghost aids Danny in taking out his biggest foe. With the forthcoming Doctor Sleep movie being released, there’s no telling if he’ll make a surprise appearance.

Meanwhile, when the cameras weren’t rolling, the cast was up to plenty of off-set antics of their own. Disclaimer: after you read about what went down, it might have you rethinking everything — were those angsty expressions just good acting, or were they bringing some real-life drama into it?
