Elton John

2019 seems to be the year of Elton John. First, a farewell tour around the globe. Then, a critically acclaimed biopic. Now, Elton John is releasing his tell-all autobiography, titled Me. In this book, he shares about his life in and outside of music. From his struggles with addiction and rejection to his triumph as a musician, father, and husband, the autobiography captures the portrait of a man millions of fans around the world cherish. While much of the book is heartwarming, Elton spares no detail about the gossip he was privy to in music and British celebrity circles. And, as a long-time friend of the royal family, he dishes out some dirty royal secrets. There is one, however, that truly threw readers for a loop.

Elton John Watched The Queen Slap Her Own Nephew

The Queen of England is known for her poise and grace. However, being a close member of the royal circle, Elton John was able to witness a more vivacious side to her that others did not. In his book, Elton details one particular instance when Viscount Linley, the son of Princess Margaret and nephew of Queen Elizabeth, was reprimanded after not listening to his aunt. According to the story, Viscount Linley was asked to spend time with his sister, who was feeling sick and unable to attend a royal party. Elton wrote, “I saw her approach Viscount Linley and ask him to look in on his sister, who’d been taken ill and had retired to her room.” Instead of doing as he was told, Viscount Linley tried to sneak away and continue enjoying the festivities. However, no one gets past the Queen. She quickly realized that he had not done as he was told and received a swift licking from his aunt, the Queen.

‘Don’t argue with me, I am the Queen!’

Elton John watched as Viscount Linley learned his lesson the hard way. After discovering that he had not gone to see his sister, the Queen stopped him and proceeded to smack him in the face — more than once. Elton John writes in his memoir, “When he repeatedly tried to fob her off, the Queen lightly slapped him across the face, saying, ‘Don’t” – SLAP – “argue” – SLAP – “with” – SLAP – “me” – SLAP – “I” – SLAP – “am” – SLAP – “THE QUEEN!'” Elton noted that the slaps were all in good humor, and did not harm the boy in any way except for perhaps harming his ego. He sulked off to his sister’s bedroom to check on her as asked, without any more arguments or delays. He continued, “As he left, she saw me staring at her, gave me a wink and walked off.” It seems the Queen of England knows how to get things done.

More From Elton John’s ‘Me’

The Queen isn’t the only royal with whom Elton John had a long history. He apparently spills the tea on his relationship with Princess Diana, as well as the many men who fought for her after her divorce. Elton John witnessed as Richard Gere, Sylvester Stallone, and many other men vied for her attention, and rarely received it. He recounts many other fun nights with Diana and the rest of the royals. However, Elton John’s autobiography isn’t just about the royal family. The excerpt says about the story. “In a voice that is warm, humble and open, this is Elton on his music and his relationships, his passions and his mistakes.” It encompasses his entire life from childhood until now, and is sure to be a best-seller by the end of the year.
