5 Things To Learn From Ellen And Portia’s Amazing Marriage

Published

on

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are one of the most loved Hollywood couples of all time. They have been together for over 15 years, and are still just as in love now as they were then. Plus, they have a few things to teach others when it comes to building a relationship that lasts. Here’s what we’ve learned from seeing Portia and Ellen conquer life and marriage together since 2004.

It’s Okay To Be Yourself

Ellen DeGeneres came out as a lesbian in 1997, however, it took Portia a lot longer to feel comfortable about the subject. In a 2013 interview, she told Inside the Actor’s Studio, “I think when I really, truly came out was the Golden Globes [in 2004]… that was the first time that we actually stepped out together as a couple, but for me, it was the first time I stepped out as a gay woman, really.” She has had no trouble expressing her love for Ellen ever since.

You Don’t Have To Have A Big Wedding To Have A Happy Marriage

Ellen and Portia got married in 2008 with a total of 19 guests, right in their home in Los Angeles. Ellen admitted to People magazine that planning a larger wedding “just got to be too big and stressful.” The couple wore a beautiful dress and suit combo tailor-made by Zac Posen. They exchanged their own custom vows during the ceremony and had a very small dinner afterward with family.

Don’t Listen To Gossip, Especially If It’s About You

The tabloids have rumored that Portia and Ellen were on the verge of divorce since they got married, but nothing could be further from the truth. DeGeneres confirmed their happy marriage in an interview, “We don’t know anything about [the rumors] until somebody tells us… We really don’t almost break up, we don’t fight, we’re madly in love.”

Your Family Can Be Anything You Want It To Be

While many people choose to have kids after marriage, Portia and Ellen have decided that their family will be just two. DeGeneres addressed the baby rumors in her 2011 book Seriously…I’m Kidding, by writing “We love to be around children after they’ve been fed and bathed… But we ultimately decided that we don’t want children of our own. There is far too much glass in our house.”

Find Similar Passions And Dreams So You Can Achieve Them Together

While Ellen and Portia both have high-profile careers, it isn’t the only thing they have in common. Both are avid animal rights activists, and in 2008 the couple decided to commit to a vegan lifestyle. DeGeneres has received the PETCO Foundation’s HOPE Award and  PETA’s Woman of the Year award for their charitable work to raise money for animals in need. They not only make a great married couple but are changing the world along the way.

Movie villains are there to make us feel fear, anger and frustration—in other words, every negative emotion that exists. They are the bad guy, and most films make sure that fact is clear to viewers from the get go. When it isn’t, they do a good job of clarifying later on.
