Over the years, Black Lives Matter has grown to become an international movement. Many celebrities have shown their support, including Ellen DeGeneres. Unfortunately, DeGeneres found herself in hot water for a controversial tweet surrounding George Floyd. Now, the host is apologizing for her words.
The Tweet That Started It All
The death of George Floyd sparked outrage from people around the world. DeGeneres sent out a tweet to show her outrage. “Like so many of you, I am angry and I am sad. People of color in this country have faced injustice for far too long,” DeGeneres said on Twitter. “For things to change, things must change. We must commit ourselves to this change with conviction and with love.”
Unfortunately, this tweet didn’t sit well will many people. Some considered this tweet to be a simple PR move by DeGeneres. It lacked any sort of passion surrounding what’s going on. The major issue surrounding the tweet is that it didn’t specifically mention African-Americans. The protests were sparked by African-Americans constantly being victims of police brutality.
DeGeneres Making Questionable Choices
This tweet isn’t the only controversial thing DeGeneres has done lately. Over the past year, DeGeneres has been the subject of some seemingly uncharacteristic news stories. In October, she was seen hanging out with George Bush, who strongly opposes gay marriage. DeGeneres defended herself by saying she’s friends with people who have opposing views. Despite this, many saw her defense to be completely unsatisfactory.
Aside from the protests relating to police brutality, the coronavirus epidemic has been a major topic in the United States. When coronavirus hit, DeGeneres didn’t become a fan of social distancing. “One thing that I’ve learned from being in quarantine is that people — this is like being in jail, is what it is,” DeGeneres said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Many people criticized DeGeneres for saying this while sitting inside her million-dollar mansion. This comment also didn’t sit well with people working in prisons. The coronavirus has seen an increase in jail populations across the country. Some state prisons hit hardest include Ohio, Louisiana, and Connecticut. The video featuring the comment was marked unlisted on her YouTube account before being deleted.
Owning Up To Her Mistake
On a recent episode of her show, DeGeneres confronted the backlash head-on. “As a white person, I don’t always know what to say,” DeGeneres said. “I think right now white people have to just sit in our discomfort and we have to admit there’s a lot we don’t know about black people’s lives and about a black person’s experience. There is horrible injustice towards black people that has been ignored for far too long.”
While DeGeneres quickly became America’s favorite host, she wants to do better. “I want to learn how to be a better person, how to do better. I was the dancing lady for a little while and now I want to help educate my audience. I want to educate myself.”

Ellen’s Making Things Right
Following her statement, DeGeneres decided to make donations to some important causes. Black Lives Matter, the American Civil Liberties Union, the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund, and the George Floyd Memorial Fund are on DeGeneres’ radar. As expected, the host is asking fans to donate some money to these great organizations as well. If they’re short on cash, fans can always donate their time with volunteer work.
Like everyone else, DeGeneres can make mistakes from time to time. Fortunately, the talk show host took the time to understand what went wrong. In the end, being able to fix critical errors is the perfect step towards being an ally.
