Ed Sheeran Hasn’t Smoked A Single Cigarette In A Year

Ed Sheeran has done what all nicotine addicts claim they can do anytime. The beloved pop star hasn’t smoked a cigarette in over a year. But will he be able to stay quit?

A Major Milestone

Sheeran posted a captivating photo of himself on stage with the caption: “Celebrating one year being a non-smoker today.” Even though some people (especially non-smokers) might not see the big deal, this is a major milestone within the context of Sheeran’s history of substance use.

Sheeran previously quit smoking in 2011 for a whole year, as well as for a week and a half in 2015. The problem stemmed from how deeply rooted cigarettes were in his daily life. “It was like a routine,” he said on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I’d do a sound check, have a cigarette, do a gig, have a cigarette, have food, have a cigarette.”

The Toll Of The Music Industry

Ed Sheeran found it hard to cope with all the pressure that comes with constant touring. In fact, cigarettes weren’t his biggest problem. “I think you need to, when you get into the industry, adjust to it – and I didn’t adjust because I was constantly working on tour. And all the pitfalls that people read about, I just found myself slipping into all of them. Mostly, like, substance abuse,” he said on an episode of The Jonathan Ross Show last year.

But his passion for music helped him break out of the darker habits. “I focused on work, and I can’t work under the influence, I can’t write songs under the influence, I can’t perform under the influence – so the more I worked the less [that happened].”

He Didn’t Do It Alone

Last January, Sheeran had another reason for celebration – his engagement to his girlfriend Cherry Seaborn. In fact, he credits her for his change of lifestyle.

“I was a 25 year old in the music industry on tour so I just needed someone to balance me out,” he said.

Keep it up, Ed!
