To Eat Like A Queen: Inside The Queen’s Diet And Quirky Restrictions

Queen Elizabeth II wears a crown on her head, rides around in carriages and sits on a throne, but what does she eat? While we know all about her public life, what she gets up to behind the palace’s gates is what intrigues us most. Here’s everything we know about the royal diet, and it’s not what you would expect.

Not A Foodie

As Queen, with access to the best food, top chefs, and a huge royal kitchen, she could have any food in the world at any time. Despite this, the royal food habits are said to be surprisingly boring.

She plans the menu, meeting with the royal households’ head chef twice a week, and according to former royal head chef Mark Flanagan it’s never that exciting. He told The Telegraph the Queen wasn’t a “foodie” and is “disciplined” in what she eats. He explained: “She eats to live, unlike Prince Philip who loves to eat and would stand and talk food all day.”

Cups Of Tea

The Queen starts her day with the very British “tea and biscuits” at 7:30 am. This means a freshly brewed pot of Earl Grey tea and cookies. She doesn’t take milk or sugar.

Next up is breakfast, which can be cereal or a boiled egg. Sometimes it is just marmalade on toast, another British favorite. She’s said to be a fan of Kellogg’s cereal including Special K and Corn Flakes, which she serves herself from Tupperware. Apparently, she thinks it keeps it fresher. The Queen eats breakfast alone every day at 9 am because her husband, Prince Phillip, prefers to eat earlier.

A Simple Lunch

Lunch is served at 1 pm and would usually be a light meal, something like fish and salad with no carbs. She doesn’t wait long before her next meal, though. At around 3 pm the Queen sits down to afternoon tea. This very British affair consists of sandwiches, biscuits and cakes. And, of course, more cups of tea.

There are always two types of sandwiches, like cucumber or salmon, with their crusts cut off. For the cakes, her favorites are honey and cream sponge, ginger, fruit and chocolate biscuit. She’s also partial to McVities Rich Tea biscuits.

Extravagant Dinners

The Queen doesn’t stop there. For dinner, she has either game, like pheasant, or fish followed by a light dessert, such as fresh fruit.

A large amount of the Queen’s food is sourced from her many estates around the U.K. like salmon from Balmoral, meaning everything she eats is the best of the best.

Four Cocktails A Day

While her diet might not be that exciting, her drinking habits definitely are. The Queen has at least four cocktails a day starting with a gin and Dubonnet with ice and lemon before lunch.

Dubonnet is a wine-based aperitif that blends fortified wine, herbs, and spices. She follows that with a glass of wine and a dry gin martini at lunch. In the evening she relaxes with a glass of champagne, usually in front of the TV. Now that sounds like a queen to us.
