Dumbledore And Grindelwald’s Personal Relationship Confirmed

Published

on

Esteemed author J.K. Rowling confirmed in a recent interview that Dumbledore and Grindelwald did indeed have a more intimate relationship than what has been explicitly stated thus far.

A World Of Ever-Growing Depth

Every now and then an author comes along who is able to transport readers into a different world. It’s safe to say J.K. Rowling has joined the ranks of fantasy writers who have done so.

A complex world means complex characters who have a life all their own outside the story being told. When fans wish to know something about these characters that isn’t printed they must ask the author… Or wait until she divulges the information.

Dumbledore and Grindelwald

Ever since Rowling made the announcement regarding Dumbledore’s sexuality in 2007 rumors have flown about who everyone’s favorite headmaster might have had a relationship with. The mystery surrounding Grindelwald made him a likely candidate.

These rumors were confirmed last year with the release of the latest film of the franchise, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. One scene, in particular, stands out. The minister of Magic approaches Dumbledore asking him to deal with Grindelwald since he’s the only one with any hope of defeating the dark wizard. Dumbledore refuses. The Minister then recalls that the two were “as close as brothers” once only to be corrected by Albus saying that they were “closer than brothers.”

Rowling Confirms

J.K. Rowling herself confirms this while recording special features for the film’s DVD/Blueray release saying,  “Their relationship was incredibly intense. It was passionate, and it was a love relationship. But as happens in any relationship, gay or straight or whatever label we want to put on it, one never knows really what the other person is feeling. You can’t know, you can believe you know. So I’m less interested in the sexual side – though I believe there is a sexual dimension to this relationship – than I am in the sense of the emotions they felt for each other, which ultimately is the most fascinating thing about all human relationship.”

That cements it. Theory confirmed. As to how or when their relationship turned so sour, the specifics have not yet been revealed.
