Marie Kondo, author and star of the 2019 Netflix show Tidying Up with Marie Kondo, is known for her tips on how to bring a little more joy to the home. Her famed “Konmari” method of decluttering involves one sorting through their belongings and only keeping things that “spark joy”. With her famed skill at decluttering homes, some may wonder what exactly Kondo’s own home is like. Well, here’s the answer!
Her Current Home
Kondo and her husband move quite a bit and they’ve lived in quite a few places. Yet, their most recent home is in Los Angeles, California. She talked about what this home is like in an interview with Elle Decor:
“I don’t have a particular decorating style, but one thing that I like to maintain in my house is to have a very purified environment. Every morning, I open all the windows in the house and I burn incense to purify the space. I let the old air out and allow the new air to come in. I also like crystals and place them in different parts of my home. They help to purify the space. Another thing I do, which is a Japanese tradition, is put salt in different places in my home. Salt has a purification property in Japanese culture. You can put it in any place that feels very muddled or heavy. People tend to put it in the bedroom or entryway, but it can really be placed anywhere that needs more clarity.”
To many who hear about Kondo’s home, the way she decorates might seem spiritual.
Speaking of Spiritualty…
Kondo comes from the beautiful country of Japan where the majority religion is Shinto. Many people who practice Shinto have an altar in their homes called a kamidana and Marie Kondo just so happens to be one of those people. In an interview with The Cut, she had this to say about it:
“I wake up naturally around 6 or 6:30 a.m. I rarely use an alarm clock. After waking up, I open all of the windows, let the breeze in, and then burn incense. At home, we have a Japanese-style kamidana. On the shelf, there is some salt, some rice, and some evergreen fronds, and I’ll give this a once-over, freshening things up. Then I’ll pray for the health of my family and friends, and also for myself to get done as much as possible what needs to be done. This is not a religious thing really at all. It’s just for me to take this time every morning to feel gratitude. It’s a practice I started when I was still single, maybe about seven years ago.”
There is a difference between spiritual practices for a non-religious purpose. It seems like Kondo incorporates much of this non-religious spirituality in her own home. This could be said to be part of the appeal of Kondo’s tidying philosophies. To her, decluttering the home is a spiritual process. For example, she encourages those following her method to thank items before getting rid of them.
Kondo’s Home Office
Kondo also works out of her home. She runs KonMari, a company that helps people to organize their houses. She does not have a designated room that she uses as an office. Rather, she has a corner with an antique desk and chair she works from according to an interview with The Cut.
What Sparks Joy for Kondo?
Marie Kondo spoke of a few things in her home that sparked joy for her in an interview with HelloGiggles: “The crystal in my bedroom, my earthen pot, ‘donabe,’ in which I cook special rice, [and] my antique writing desk.”
