The Doctor Is In: Matt Smith Joins ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’

Since the summer, filming for Star Wars: Episode IX has been happening in the UK and fans around the world have been hoping for on-set photos to give them clues about the film. Since filming is slated to end early next year, more people can (and will) be added for a quick role. One beloved sci-fi actor has been given an important role.

Matt Smith will have an important part in the forthcoming film. Many of the casting rumors state that Smith might portray Rey’s father. This casting follows rumors of Keri Russell portraying her mother.

There’s no telling when he’ll start filming his scenes. More information on his role will be released in the near future.

Born To Save The Universe

Smith is best known for his portrayal of the 11th Doctor on Doctor Who from 2010 to 2014. His performance earned him two SFX Awards for Best Actor and two National Television Awards for Outstanding Drama Performance: Male. Following the show, he joined the Terminator franchise as Skynet in Terminator Genisys.

Recently, he portrayed Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh in the Netflix series The Crown. He’s earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for his work. Aside from Star Wars, Smith is working on the films Official Secrets and His House.

Join The Resistance

Aside from Smith and Russell, other actors will join the final chapter of the new Star Wars trilogy. The Lord of the Rings star Dominic Monaghan will have an undisclosed role. Billy Dee Williams will reprise his Lando role for the first time in the Star Wars universe since Return of the Jedi. Rounding out the newer cast members are Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant, who will reunite with his former Doctor Who co-star.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released on December 20, 2019.
