Over fifty years have passed since Mary Poppins drifted into theaters in 1964. Since then, millions have grown to love the classic film and the incomparable Julie Andrews in the title role. Now, Disney’s released a new teaser trailer that introduces big changes. There’s a new film sequel — and a new Mary.

In Need Of A Nanny

Many years after the original film’s conclusion, Mary Poppins returns from the sky to assist the grown-up Michael and Jane Banks, along with Michael’s three children. Tragedy has struck the family, and they need the guidance of the magical caregiver now more than ever.

The audience might need reassurance that the iconic role of Mary Poppins is in good hands. Towards the end of the teaser, Mary is revealed. She’s a familiar face, sure to please many Disney fans.

Emily Blunt As Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins is played by actress Emily Blunt, whose past work includes starring in The Devil Wears Prada and The Girl On The Train. And she’s no stranger to Disney musicals. Previously, she played The Baker’s Wife in the popular musical Into The Woods. And yet, Disney fans may then wonder: what about Bert?

Lin Manuel Miranda will play Jack, a streetlamp lighter sure to possess all the airy charm of the Hamilton creator who plays him. Though Lin Manuel Miranda’s blessed with the same loving, wholesome charisma of Dick Van Dyke, fans will be surprised to discover that the character Jack is not related to Bert at all. On the contrary, he’s the son of character in the original film who couldn’t be more different than the carefree chimney sweep.

New Characters Sprung From Old

Jack is the son of Mr. Dawes Sr., a curmudgeonly banker with a low tolerance for nonsense. However, at the end of the original film, Dawes does learn to laugh. It’s a lesson, perhaps, we’ll see Lin Manuel Miranda demonstrate as Jack. Joining Miranda and Blunt is truly an all-star cast.

Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, and Angela Lansbury round out the cast. The film will enter theaters Christmas 2018. Watch the teaser trailer below:
