Disney Announces Veteran Voice Actor Alan Tudyk Will Play Iago In ‘Aladdin’ Remake

Published

on

Disney’s live-action remake of Aladdin is coming to theaters very soon and details about the film have been trickling in. Fans were curious if Iago, the wisecracking parrot belonging to the film’s antagonist, Jafar, would actually speak in the film. Well, it looks like the bird has indeed found his voice!

Finding Iago

Aladdin, of course, features three animals: Iago, Rajah the tiger, and Abu the monkey. While all three of the animals are major characters, the only one who actually speaks is Iago. With no official word from Disney, fans were unsure if Iago would speak or not.

The company announced that Alan Tudyk will be the voice behind the parrot in the live-action remake directed by Guy Ritchie. Tudyk will be replacing the original voice of Iago, Gilbert Gottfried. Gottfried played Iago in the original 1992 film and its sequels, The Return of Jafar and Aladdin and the King of Thieves.

A Disney Veteran

Tudyk is no stranger to Disney or to voiceover work. He’s done quite a bit of work for Disney Animation, voicing several characters in films like Wreck-It Ralph, Ralph Breaks the InternetBig Hero 6Zootopia, and Moana. With that experience, it made sense that he would be in the running to voice Iago.

In addition to this role, he’s played the droid K-2S0 in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (via motion-capture). Tudyk will also voice The Joker in DC Universe’s upcoming Harley Quinn animated series.

Arabian Nights

The long-awaited remake takes Disney fans back in time as we see the fictional land of Agrabah come to life. The film stars Will Smith as the Genie (originally played by the late Robin Williams), as well as Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Marwan Kenzari (Jafar), and Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine).

Moviegoers will see this Disney classic remade for the big screen when it hits theaters on May 24. For now, they’ve caught a glimpse of this whole new world with the official trailer that Disney recently released. Watch below!
