Director Steven Soderbergh Is Back With Heist Film ‘Logan Lucky’

Director Steven Soderbergh returned from a four-year hiatus with his latest film “Logan Lucky”, starring Channing Tatum and Adam Driver as down-on-their-luck brothers who plan to rob NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 race. The film’s trailer premiered on Sunday, halfway through the real-life Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina. NASCAR played a major role in the film’s production, and will continue to do so for its promotion, according to the Associated Press.

“Lucky Logan” reunites Soderbergh and Tatum, who had previously worked together on “Side Effects”, 2012’s “Magic Mike”, and 2011’s “Haywire”.

Soderbergh admitted to not being a big NASCAR fan while growing up in the south. “NASCAR was kind of a mystery to me,” he said. Though apparently after making his latest film, he has come to understand pastime.

Tatum added, “Logan Lucky” is about “a bunch of good ol’ boys robbing NASCAR and that got a pretty good giggle out of me.” And from the looks of the trailer, there will definitely be some comedic moments—a hallmark of Soderbergh’s other heist films.

The all-star ensemble cast also includes “Family Guy” creator Seth McFarlane, Katie Homes, Academy Award winner Hilary Swank, Katherine Waterston, and Sebastian Stan…not to mention a crazed, blond-haired Daniel Craig that you just have to see for yourself. “You Logans must be as simple-minded as people say,” Craig says of the title characters as the trailer comes to an end.

Soderbergh certainly isn’t new to the heist genre. Some of his previous works include the “Ocean’s” trilogy and 1998’s “Out of Sight”, starring longtime collaborator George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez.

A number of NASCAR stars, including Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards, and Joey Logano will also appear in the film, but not as race car drivers.

“When I read (the script) it felt like it was a kind of film that I like to watch, the kind of film I like to make,” Soderbergh told the AP. “It was different. It didn’t feel like a repeat of the ‘Ocean’s’ movie. It’s in the same universe, but in a different galaxy.”

Soderbergh’s last films were “Side Effects” and the made-for-TV movie “Behind the Candelabra”, both released in 2013. In the latter,  Michael Douglas starred as Liberace while Matt Damon played Scott thorson, the world-famous pianist’s much younger lover. It went on to win numerous Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy Awards.

Distributed by Bleecker Street and Fingerprint Releasing, “Logan Lucky” is slated to hit theaters on August 18.
