These Deleted Movie Endings Would Have Completely Changed These Film Favorites

Published

on

Film endings can either wrap things up nicely or simply fall apart. Sometimes, those weren’t the original endings planned for the movie. Many endings either get placed on the DVD release or never leave the storyboards. We look at five deleted movie endings that had a bit more bite than the ones that ultimately made the cut.

The Lion King

In the climax of The Lion King, Simba tossed Scar off the cliff to be eaten by hyenas. The original ending had Simba being knocked off Pride Rock but managing to survive. Thinking that he’s dead, Scar cackles like a madman as the flames consume him. Disney changed the ending because it was too dark.

First Blood

First Blood concludes with Rambo turning himself in to the authorities. The original ending took its inspiration from the 1972 novel. It saw Rambo killing himself following his battle with Colonel Sam Trautman. Sylvester Stallone asked for the character to survive at the end. A small test audience that witnessed the original ending walked away disgusted.

Clerks

Clerks ended with Dante closing things up for the night. The original ending finds him being a victim of a robbery, which ends in his death. Director Kevin Smith was forced to change it because of somber reactions at its Independent Feature Film Market screening. The entire View Askewniverse was on the line if Smith didn’t make the cut.

Little Shop Of Horrors

The original ending of Little Shop Of Horrors was based on the ending of the Broadway play. The 23-minute ending finds Seymour being devoured by Audrey II. Giant plants would go on to invade the country and destroy everything in their path. “For every musical number there was applause, they loved it, it was just fantastic…until we killed our two leads. And then the theater became a refrigerator, an ice box,” director Frank Oz told Entertainment Weekly.

Warner Bros.

28 Days Later

28 Days Later had multiple alternative endings where bicyclist Jim dies. The main alternative ending, which was shown in theaters, concludes in an action-packed manner. After Jim’s death, Selena and Hannah decide to grab their guns and handle the infected by themselves. This resolution was originally the true ending, but it was removed due to poor audience reactions.
