DCEU’s Batman Movie Has Changed Its Name

Published

on

The DC Extended Universe has gotten off to a rocky start. Thanks to tonal issues, directors leaving projects left and right, and significant studio interference, it’s hard to tell which reports about the upcoming slate of films are reliable. Despite being one of DC’s top properties, even the upcoming Batman movie has struggled to find its feet. Though it has landed a talented director (for now) in Matt Reeves, rumors about the direction the film is taking under his leadership continue to confuse fans.

A Title Change Could Reflect Shift In Focus

When Ben Affleck was set to write, direct, and star in the film, it was rumored to be titled The Batman. It was a simple yet elegant title that set the tone for a Batman movie the likes of which fans hadn’t seen yet. But a new rumor suggests that this won’t be the final title after all.

Indie Wire

Daniel Richtman, a freelance writer for SuperBroMovies, posted what appears to be a studio document, possibly a script, on Twitter showing that the title has changed to Untitled Batman Project. We can’t say for sure that this is an official document, but it does make sense that Warner Bros. would want to give Reeves room to start fresh without being tied to Affleck’s version.

Affleck’s Departure

A little while after Reeves joined the project as the new director, rumors of Affleck’s involvement starting circulating. An early rumor held that Reeves wanted to work with a younger Batman than Affleck, who has played Batman as an aging crime fighting veteran. This rumor turned out to be true, as Affleck took to Twitter a few weeks ago to announce that he will no longer be playing Batman full-time.

Affleck was clearly disappointed in the direction the project was heading. Over a year ago, it was announced that he asked Geoff Johns co-write the next draft, leading to speculation that the movie might take cues from the Batman: Earth One graphic novel by Johns.

Will It Ever Actually Come Out?

DC has every reason to get a new Batman movie in theaters, because Batman sells tickets. However, The Batman was announced well over two years ago and has gone through so many production changes, we’re starting to wonder if it’ll actually get made. According to some sources, it will begin filming in November. But this project has nearly gone to production before only to be halted for negotiations.

Thankfully, Warner Bros. has seen success from DC’s lesser-known properties such as Wonder Woman and Aquaman. It might be best to let the a new slate of DC heroes carry the torch for a little while.
